Lady Chaps Hosting UCO For Saturday Doubleheader

UCO, Making First-Ever Trip to Lubbock, Playing In Their First Road Game Since April 2019

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 27, 2021) – No.24 Lubbock Christian University plays their final weekend set of games before jumping into Lone Star Conference play Saturday, as they host University of Central Oklahoma for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at PlainsCapital Park.

LCU and UCO Series Snapshot
  • LCU and the Bronchos are meeting for the second time all-time and for the second consecutive season (LCU owns a 1-0 record in the series).
  • Last season, the two teams met for the first time, with LCU defeating No.7 UCO 8-3. Alivia Villarreal (2-for-3 with three RBI), Brooke Makemson (2-for-4 with two RBI),  Savannah Wysocki (2-for-4) and Skylar Herrera (2-for-4 with a home run) each having two-hit performances.  
  • UCO is a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and the Lady Chaps are 4-0 against MIAA programs this season (all at home).
  
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 9-2 this season and entering Saturday's play riding a eight-game win streak.
  • LCU's only losses of the season came Jan. 30 in Pensacola, Fla., as they fell 2-1 and 7-1 to West Florida.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .348 as a team (18th nationally), with 10 home runs (ninth nationally) in 11 games. LCU averages 6.36 runs a contest, ranking 28th nationally.
  • In the circle, LCU has an ERA of 1.00 (ninth nationally). Opponents are hitting .166 against LCU this season and the team has a nation-leading five shutouts.
  • On the field, LCU ranks 38th nationally and fifth in the LSC with a .970 fielding percentage.
 
Who is Doing What?
  • Pitcher Taylor Franco is 5-1 this season with a 0.00 ERA in 39.1 innings pitched (also has a save). She has five complete games (co-leads nationally) and 21 strikeouts (39th nationally). Opponents are hitting .132 against Franco, who is 26-11 in her LCU career. She is one of three pitchers nationally to appear in seven games this season. Her five wins ranks tied for second nationally. Franco opens the week with a 0.56 WHIP, ranking eighth nationally.
  • Brooke Makemson is hitting .433 on the season. She has four home runs (third nationally) and 15 RBI on the season (fifth in the nation), and was named NFCA National Player of the Week on Feb. 9 after hitting .692 (9-for-13) at the LCU Invitational.
  • Savannah Wysocki leads LCU at the plate (.439), with a team-leading 18 hits (ranks third nationally). She also has eight stolen bases on the season as well (second nationally). Wysocki has one triple this season, placing her with 13 in her LCU career.
  • Addi Lewis is also hitting over .400, entering Saturday hitting .406.
 
Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish sixth in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their seventh season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their second season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 16 softball programs in the LSC this season.
 
Home Sweet Home
  • LCU is 260-30 (89.7%) all-time in home games at PlainsCapital Park.
  • Last season, LCU was 13-1 at home.
  • They are 4-0 at home this season, with all wins coming against MIAA programs.
  • LCU is hitting .410 at home with six home runs and 7.5 runs per game. Brooke Makemson is hitting .692 with four home runs and 13 RBI at home.
  • Taylor Franco is 2-0 at home with a 0.00 ERA, and opponents are hitting .045 against her (two hits allowed in 14.1 innings pitched).

Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 11th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Saturday with a softball record of 427-130.
  • Along with surpassing 300 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
National Notes
  • LCU opened the season ranked No.19 in the NFCA Top 25 Preseason Poll.
  • The Lady Chaps had dropped to No.25 in the first in-season poll of the season, but this week bounced back to No.24.
  • The Lady Chaps went 8-0 last season against nationally ranked programs.
 
Looking at UCO
  • The Bronchos went 13-12 last season (after a 40-8 season in 2019), and they were 3-1 in MIAA play at season's close.
  • UCO is making their first trip to Lubbock. They will play a doubleheader at West Texas A&M Sunday. This is their first true road game since April 27, 2019, as they have played all six games of their 2021 6-0 record at home, and played all 25 of their games last season either at home or at neutral site venues.
  • UCO is picked first in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • The Bronchos rank sixth nationally in triples with four on the season.
  • Pitcher Kylee Lynch is 4-0 on the season with a 1.64 ERA. Opponents are hitting .220 against her. Her prior game pitched was against Colorado Christian, which is coached by Daren Hays' father and former LCU legendary coach Larry Hays.
