TIPOFF
Lubbock Christian University's men's basketball team will face off with Arkansas-Fort Smith for the second time in less than 24 hours after a 76-72 victory on Friday. It is the final game of LCU's three-game road swing before they return home Thursday to host Western New Mexico in non-conference action.
Â
FIVE THINGS TO FOCUS ON
1 | Freshman guard
Gonzalo Corbalan had one of the best nights by a Chap all season on Friday, scoring 32 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field and a 12-of-15 performance at the free throw line. It was by far a career-high for the Argentina native as well as being the most points scored by an LCU player this season. Corbalan has played in all 11 games this season and is averaging 10.1 points per contest on a team-leading 68.4 percent shooting.
Â
2 | UAFS shot 51 percent in their loss on Friday, becoming the first team to hit more than half of their shots against LCU's defense this season. The Chaps enter Saturday's matchup with the second-best field goal percentage (41 percent) and scoring (63.6) defense in the Lone Star Conference.
Â
3 | Lubbock Christian has been the best team in the league this season at limiting turnovers, including Friday night when they turned the ball over just seven times and allowed only 10 points off those turnovers. For the season, the Chaps have averaged 10.7 turnovers per game, which is the lowest mark in the LSC. They also have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.78 to lead the league.
Â
4 | The 2020-21 LCU men's basketball team has now left its mark in the program record books. With Friday's win, they set a new mark for the best start in program history at 11-0, breaking the previous mark of 10-0, which was set by the 1996-97 team under former head coach/athletic director John Copeland. Any wins from here on will serve to strengthen their hold on that record.
Â
5 | The Lions got a season-high 24 points from Matthew Wilson and 23 points from Payton Brown on Friday night. The two combined for 47 points, or 65 percent of the total offense. Brown is now averaging 17.7 points per game for the season, which is the eight-highest individual mark in the LSC. Â Wilson is averaging 15.2 per game.
THE SERIES WITH THE LIONS
After Friday night's win, Lubbock Christian now leads the all-time series with Arkansas-Fort Smith 8-5. The Chaps have also won four straight games, including the last three inside the Stubblefield Center. UAFS last beat LCU on Jan. 27, 2018, winning 82-74 in the Stubblefield Center.
