LCU Hosting Two More MIAA Programs Saturday To Close Opening Homestand

Lady Chaps Hit .379 Friday and Held Opponents to a Combined Five Hits

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 6, 2021) – No.19 Lubbock Christian University closes their first home weekend of play and the Lubbock Sports College Invitational Saturday, hosting Fort Hays State (1 p.m.) and Nebraska-Kearney (3 p.m.) at PlainsCapital Park.

LCU and FHSU Series Snapshot
  • LCU has never faced Fort Hays State.
  • FHSU is a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and LCU went 2-1 last season against members of the MIAA. They are 2-0 this season against MIAA members.
  • LCU is 43-3 all-time against Kansas-based programs, and 23-0 against Kansas programs outside of Newman.
  • Fort Hays State marks the fourth (of five) opponent (all regular season opponents thus far) LCU is meeting for the first-time all-time.

Who is Doing What?
  • Pitcher Taylor Franco is 2-1 this season with a 0.00 ERA in 20.0 innings pitched. She has three complete games and 16 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting .149 against Franco, who is 23-11 in her LCU career.
  • Savannah Wysocki leads LCU hitting .444 on the season (8-for-18). She has a five stolen bases on the season as well. Wysocki has one triple this season, placing her with 13 in her LCU career.
  • Brooke Makemson and Lexi Riggs each have a .500 on-base percentage. Makemson has an .857 slugging mark, with two home runs and seven RBI on the 2021 campaign.
 
Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish sixth in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their seventh season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their second season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 16 softball programs in the LSC this season.

  • LCU is 258-30 (89.5%) all-time in home games at PlainsCapital Park.
  • Last season, LCU was 13-1 at home.
  • They are 2-0 at home this season, with all tournament stats this weekend mirroring their home statistics.
 
Home Openers
  • LCU's win over Washburn Friday places LCU with a 14-0 all-time record in home openers at PlainsCapital Park.
  • Friday's 7-0 win (over Washburn) marked their eighth home openers resulting in a shutout victories. It also marked the second consecutive season with a home-opening shutout win (LCU defeated Colo. Colorado Springs 10-0 in last season's home opener).

  • LCU went 20-6 last season (COVID-shortened) and was tied for fifth in the Lone Star Conference with a 5-3 conference mark at the time the season ended.

Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 11th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Friday with a softball record of 421-130.
  • Along with surpassing 300 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
National Notes
  • LCU opens the season ranked No.19 in the NFCA Top 25 Preseason Poll
  • The Lady Chaps went 8-0 last season against nationally ranked programs.
 
Looking at FHSU
  • The Tigers went 15-13 last season, and they were 2-4 in the MIAA before the season's cancellation.
  • FHSU is making their second consecutive trip to the Lubbock Sports College Invitational. Last season. FHSU went 4-1 at the event, with their lone loss coming against Chadron State.
  • Fort Hays State is picked eighth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • The Tigers enter the day 1-1 at the Lubbock Sports College Invitational this season (all their regular season games played this season have come in the tournament). They defeated UT Permian Basin before falling to West Texas A&M. Kristen Reed was 4-for-6 Friday with a homer and two RBI.
 
Looking at UNK
  • The Lopers went 13-13 last season, and they were 3-3 in MIAA play at season's close.
  • UNK is 1-1 in the Lubbock Sports College Invitational, and on the season, as they fell to Midwestern State before rebounding for a win over UT Permian Basin.
  • The Lopers are picked 10th in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Nebraska-Kearny will open Saturday's play with West Texas A&M before facing LCU.
