LCU Plays First LSC Road Series of the Season

LUBBOCK, Texas (March 12, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University heads on the road to face ranked competition for the first time this season, as the Lady Chaps head to Schaeffer Park to face No.19 West Texas A&M for a Lone Star Conference doubleheader. First pitch for the Rivalry on the Range series is scheduled at 4 p.m.

LCU and WT Series Snapshot
  • WTAMU leads the all-time series over LCU, 14-9.
  • LCU is 3-6 all-time against WTAMU at Schaeffer Park. LCU's last win in Canyon was Apr. 26, 2011, as WT has won the prior six meetings in Canyon.

How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 11-6 this season and 1-3 in LSC play after splitting a home Lone Star Conference Sunday to Cameron.

  • Pitcher Taylor Franco is 7-2 this season with a 0.58 ERA in 60.1 innings pitched (also has a save). Franco went 45.2 innings to start the season without allowing an earned run. She has eight complete games (leads nationally) and 34 strikeouts (56th nationally). Opponents are hitting .159 against Franco, who is 28-12 in her LCU career. She is one of five pitchers nationally to appear in 11 games this season. Her seven wins ranks tied for fourth nationally. Franco opens the week with a 0.75 WHIP, ranking 17th nationally.
  • Brooke Makemson is hitting .438 on the season. She has five home runs (15th nationally) and 18 RBI on the season (15th in the nation), and was named NFCA National Player of the Week on Feb. 9 after hitting .692 (9-for-13) at the LCU Invitational.
  • Savannah Wysocki, hitting .419 at the plate, has a team-leading 26 hits (ranks fifth nationally). She also has eight stolen bases on the season as well (24th nationally). Wysocki has two triples this season, placing her with 14 in her LCU career.
  • Skylar Herrera is 28th nationally in home runs (4) and is 46th in RBI (15).
  • Athena Muniz is coming off a doubleheader against Cameron in which she was 6-for-7 at the plate.

Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 11th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Friday with a softball record of 429-134.
  • Along with surpassing 300 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
National Notes
  • LCU opened the season ranked No.19 in the NFCA Top 25 Preseason Poll.
  • The Lady Chaps have bounced the prior three weeks between No.24 and No.25, and dropped out this week (they are receiving votes).
  • The Lady Chaps went 8-0 last season against nationally ranked programs, but are 0-2 against nationally ranked programs this season.
 
 Looking at WT
  • The Lady Buffs went 14-9 last season, and they were 4-2 in Lone Star Conference play at season's close.
  • WT is off to a 12-4 start to the 2021 season and they opened LSC play 0-4 after suffering defeat in road sweeps at UT Tyler and Texas A&M-Commerce.
  • The Lady Buffs are preseason picked to finish seventh in the LSC this season.
  • West Texas A&M had been undefeated 12-0 until their current four-game losing streak. The last time they had lost four straight games was on Feb. 10, 2019, which was due in part to an 8-7 loss in Lubbock for the fourth loss. The last time WT suffered consecutive shutout losses was at the 2017 South Central Regional in Canyon.
  • The Lady Buffs lead the nation in doubles (40) and rank tied for first in home runs (22). Alyx Cordell and Madison Johnson co-lead WT with five doubles, and Ruby Salzman is second nationally in homers with seven. Salzman and Shanna McBroom also co-lead the team and rank tied for second nationally in hits (each with 29).
