Lady Chaps Return Home To Host Western New Mexico

LUBBOCK, Texas (March 19, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University returns home to host Western New Mexico for a two-game Lone Star Conference series at PlainsCapital Park, with the doubleheader opening with a 2 p.m. first pitch.

LCU and WNMU Series Snapshot
  • LCU leads the all-time series over WNMU, 8-0.
  • All seven meetings have been in Lubbock and LCU has an average of 10.8 runs for and 1.9 runs allowed in the series. LCU has scored at least 10 runs in seven of the eight all-time meetings.
  • The Lady Chaps last met WNMU Feb. 3, 2019, as LCU defeated WNMU 11-0 in a TAJ Hospitality College Softball Kickoff at PlainsCapital Park in Lubbock. Annika Schwartzenberg went 3-for-3 with three RBI in the win.
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 13-8 this season and 3-5 in LSC play after sweeping Eastern New Mexico Monday.

She has 10 complete games (leads nationally) and 43 strikeouts (58th nationally). Opponents are hitting .159 against Franco, who is 29-13 in her LCU career. She is one of seven pitchers nationally to appear in 13 games this season. Her eight wins ranks tied for ninth nationally. Franco opens the week with a 0.79 WHIP, ranking 28th nationally (leads LSC).
  • Brooke Makemson is hitting .410 on the season. She has six home runs (ninth nationally) and 22 RBI on the season (10th in the nation), and was named NFCA National Player of the Week on Feb. 9 after hitting .692 (9-for-13) at the LCU Invitational.
  • Savannah Wysocki, hitting .405 at the plate, has a team-leading 30 hits (ranks fourth nationally). She also has 12 stolen bases on the season as well (13th nationally). Wysocki has two triples this season, placing her with 14 in her LCU career.
  • Skylar Herrera, ranking third nationally with three triples, is 46th  nationally in home runs (4) and is 22nd in RBI (20).
 
Lone Star Conference Breakdown
  • This season is LCU's second season in the LSC.
  • LCU is 8-8 all-time in LSC play.
  • LCU is 3-5 this season in conference play, with a 2-2 record in conference road play.
    • LCU is hitting .308 in conference, with a 3.02 team ERA.
    • Taylor Franco is 2-2 with a 1.62 ERA (opponents hitting .181) in LSC action.
    • Athena Muniz leads LCU at the plate in conference, going 11-for-25 (.440) with two home runs and four RBI.

  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish sixth in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their seventh season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their second season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 16 softball programs in the LSC this season.
 
Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 11th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Friday with a softball record of 431-136.
  • Along with surpassing 300 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
National Notes
  • LCU opened the season ranked No.19 in the NFCA Top 25 Preseason Poll.
  • The Lady Chaps bounced around between No.24 and No.25 before dropping out in early March.
  • The Lady Chaps went 8-0 last season against nationally ranked programs, but are 0-4 against nationally ranked programs this season.
 
 Looking at WNMU
  • The Mustangs went 9-12 last season, and they were 2-6 in Lone Star Conference play at season's close.
  • WNMU is off to a 1-7 start to the 2021 season and all games are LSC games.
  • The Mustangs are preseason picked to finish 16th (last) in the LSC this season.
  • Western New Mexico won their season opener on Mar. 5, but have since lost seven straight (they have not been shutout on the season).
  • WNMU ranks 18th nationally (second in LSC) in hits allowed per seven innings (12.6).
