POSTSEASON PLAY BEGINS
No.1 Lubbock Christian University opens their postseason play in the Lone Star Conference Championship in the Quarterfinals Tuesday as the top seed and hosting No.8-seed St. Mary's with a 5 p.m. tip-off inside Rip Griffin Center. With COVID-19 playing its role, the Lone Star Conference Championships (or conference tournament for simplistic understanding) returns to a campus site for the first time since 2007 (Commerce, Texas), as the eight-team tournament has four quarterfinal contests played on campus sites of the better-seeded team. The top remaining seed after Tuesday's quarterfinals round will host the remainder of the tournament Friday and Saturday. This is LCU's second season to participate in the Lone Star Conference Championships. They won the tournament last season in Frisco, Texas after competing the prior four seasons in the Heartland Conference Tournament in Tulsa, Okla., where they won three tournament titles.
THE "IF's"
IF LCU WINS: If the Lady Chaps defeat StMU, they will improve to 16-0 on the season and will advance to the Semifinals to host either Cameron or Midwestern State Friday.
IF LCU LOSES: If the Lady Chaps fall to the Rattlers, their record will drop to 16-1, they will be eliminated from the tournament and will await an at-large bid for the NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament (six-team tournament in Canyon, Texas). The NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Selection Show will air Sunday, Mar. 7 at 9 p.m. on NCAA.com.
MIDDLE-ENDING
The Lone Star Conference announced Lubbock Christian University's
Emma Middleton as the conference's women's basketball Defensive Player of the Week honoree for her play in the final week of regular season play.
Middleton was a big contributor on the defensive end of LCU's regular season sweep of West Texas A&M, which included a 68-42 home win and a 48-45 road win at the No.16 Lady Buffs. Thursday, she posted 12 points and had two blocks, with a game-high +27 plus/minus, in their home win over WT. Saturday, she tied a career high with four blocks, and had LCU's only double-double of this season with 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in the program's first-ever win in Canyon, Texas. Emma averaged 14.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks on the week.
The honor is Middleton's third LSC Player of the Week honor and second defensive honor this season. Four Lady Chaps members this season have claimed a LSC weekly honor this season, and Middleton is the only Lady Chap with multiple honors.
Ashton Duncan (offensive),
Allie Schulte (offensive) and
Juliana Robertson (defensive) have each received an honor this season, and Middleton is LCU's only recipient to win both the offensive and defensive honor on this season.

PREVIOUS RECAP VS. StMU
Dec. 12, 2020 (Lubbock, Texas) - StMU:47 - LCU:67
The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals completed a two-game weekend sweep of St. Mary's with a 67-57 Lone Star Conference victory.
LCU benefited off a strong first-half shooting performance to reach the home victory. LCU trailed 6-2, opening the first four minutes of the game 1-of-4 from the field.
Emma Middleton connected on a three-pointer with 5:35 left in the quarter and LCU went on an 8-of-11 shooting stretch from the field. LCU had a 9-0 run and an eventual 6-0 run to close the quarter, as
Madelyn Turner and
Laynee Burr each hit three-pointers to give LCU a 19-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Chaps also had a 9-0 run and an 8-0 run in the second quarter.
LCU shot 61.5% (16/26) in the opening half (8-of-12, 66.7% in the second quarter) and led 40-21 at the half. They received field goals from nine different players, and six different players connected on a three-point field goal in the half, as LCU was 7-of-11 (63.6%) from downtown in the half.
The hot shooting wouldn't return in the second half. Neither team could find their shooting touch in the third quarter. LCU turned the ball over five times and missed their first six shot attempts of the half. The Lady Chaps went a five-minute span without a point, but the best StMU could do was one field goal and a 6-0 run during the LCU lull.
Allie Schulte ended the dry spell with a layup as 4:54 remained in the quarter, which began a 9-0 LCU run, LCU closed the quarter on an 11-2 run for a 51- 29 lead.
Each team shot 25% from the field in the third quarter. The teams did warm back up in the fourth quarter. Especially St. Mary's, who went 7-of-11 (63.6) from the field in the quarter (Rattlers connected on three three-pointers in the frame).
Schulte led LCU with a balanced performance. She led the team in scoring (11 points), rebounds (6), assists (5) and steals (5). Her five steals matched a career high. LCU did have 13 different players factor into the scoring and had six players with at least seven points. They finished the game 46.4% (26/56) from the field. LCU had 12 blocks Friday, but only recorded one Saturday.
St. Mary's (0-2, 0-2) received a double-double from Hannah Wilson, who led the LSC in double-doubles last season. She had 13 points and 12 rebounds, serving as the only Rattler in double digits in either category.
