Lady Chaps Need Their Bats Today, Facing No.6 UT Tyler On The Road

UT Tyler Has Not Allowed More Than One Run In Past Six Games and Has Not Lost a Conference Game On The Season

TYLER, Texas (March 28, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University, coming off their first road win over a top-five nationally ranked program in program history (win at No.2 Texas A&M-Commerce), close out a four-game road trip against top-10 teams Sunday with a doubleheader at No.6 UT Tyler. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for a noon start, but wet field conditions has pushed the start to 2 p.m.

 LCU and UTT Series Snapshot
  • The two programs have never met.
  • They were scheduled to meet for the first time in Lubbock last season for the regular season finale, but COVID-19 canceled that portion of the season.
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 18-9 this season and 8-6 in LSC play after splitting a doubleheader Friday at No.2 Texas A&M-Commerce.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .344 as a team (25th nationally, third in LSC), with 30 home runs (fourth nationally and second in the LSC) in 27 games. LCU averages 6.4 runs a contest, ranking fourth in the LSC.
  • In the circle, LCU has an ERA of 1.84 (25th nationally). Opponents are hitting .196 against LCU this season and the team has 11 shutouts, co-leading the nation (with A&M-Commerce.
  • On the field, LCU ranks fifth in the LSC with a .969 fielding percentage.
 
Who is Doing What?
  • Pitcher Taylor Franco is 10-4 this season with a 0.71 ERA in 88.2 innings pitched (also has two saves). Franco went 45.2 innings to start the season without allowing an earned run. She has 11 complete games (second nationally) and 54 strikeouts (11th in the LSC). Opponents are hitting .165 against Franco, who is 31-14 in her LCU career (sixth player in program history with 30 wins). She is one of 10 pitchers nationally to appear in 17 games this season. Her 10 wins ranks tied for fifth nationally. Franco opens the week with a 0.74 WHIP, ranking 21st nationally (leads LSC).
  • Brooke Makemson is hitting .375 on the season. She has six home runs (25th nationally) and 26 RBI on the season (16th in the nation), and was named NFCA National Player of the Week on Feb. 9 after hitting .692 (9-for-13) at the LCU Invitational.
  • Savannah Wysocki, hitting .404 at the plate, has a team-leading 38 hits (ranks fifth nationally). She also has a nation-leading 19 stolen bases on the season as well. Wysocki has three triples this season, placing her with 15 in her LCU career to match the program career mark with Brittany Kent (2011-2012).
  • Skylar Herrera ranks second nationally with four triples, and also has four home runs and is seventh in RBI (31).
  • Tyla Lee has four home runs in her last five games played, with 11 RBI in the span off a 7-for-16 performance at the plate in the span. She is hitting .385 overall on the season.
 
Lone Star Conference Breakdown
  • This season is LCU's second season in the LSC.
  • LCU is 13-9 all-time in LSC play.
  • LCU is 8-6 this season in conference play, with a 3-3 record in conference road play.
    • LCU is hitting .339 in conference, with a 2.39 team ERA.
    • Taylor Franco is 4-3 with a 1.45 ERA (opponents hitting .184) in LSC action.
    • Maxine Valdez is 3-1 with a 1.96 ERA and opponents are hitting .128 against her in conference. She pitched the 18th no hitter in program history last Sunday, which was in 5.0 innings over UT Permian Basin.
    • Athena Muniz leads LCU at the plate in conference, going 18-for-41 (.439) with four home runs and eight RBI.
    • Tyla Lee is hitting .390 with four homers and 10 RBI in conference.
    • Skylar Herrera leads the team with 17 RBI in conference.
    • Savannah Wysocki leads the LSC with 11 stolen bases in conference contests.
 
On The Road
  • LCU is 3-5 in road play this season (6 of the 8 games played at teams currently ranked).
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .299 on the road, with a 3.13 ERA.
  • Taylor Franco (1-3) has a 1.15 ERA on the road, with four complete games.
  • Tyla Lee leads LCU on the road, hitting .409 (9-for-22).
  • Skyler Herrera leads LCU with 10 RBI on the road.
  • Angela Donaldson and Lee each have two of LCU's seven road home runs this season.
 
Streaking Along
  • Athena Muniz is LCU's active hit-streak leader, entering Sunday's games with a nine-game active hit streak.
  • Brooke Makemson had a 22-game hit streak end Friday, which is the longest by a Lady Chaps member this season and is the longest in program history.
  • Makemson has also had her mark of consecutive games reaching base safely end at 25 games on Friday.
  • Athena Muniz and Angela Donaldson have each reached base safely in their last nine games.
 
Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish sixth in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their seventh season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their second season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 16 softball programs in the LSC this season.
 
Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 11th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Sunday with a softball record of 436-137.
  • Along with surpassing 300 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
National Notes
  • LCU opened the season ranked No.19 in the NFCA Top 25 Preseason Poll.
  • The Lady Chaps bounced around between No.24 and No.25 before dropping out in early March.
  • The Lady Chaps went 8-0 last season against nationally ranked programs, but are 1-5 against nationally ranked programs this season.
 
 Looking at UTT
  • The Patriots went 17-3 last season, and they were 5-3 in Lone Star Conference play at season's close, which was their first season in the LSC.
  • UTT is running with a 20-4 mark in the 2021 season and for a second consecutive series, LCU faces a team with an unbeaten conference record (14-0). UTT has won 14 consecutive games and are 12-2 at home.
  • UT Tyler was preseason picked second in the LSC Preseason Poll.
  • The Pats are coming off a 7-1 and 8-0 sweep of Angelo State Friday. They have not allowed more than one run in six consecutive contests.
  • Payton Foster (0.74 ERA) and Erin Hill (0.94 ERA) each has 12 starts to co-lead the team and each have a sub-1.00 ERA and at least 60 strikeouts.
