Lady Chaps on the Road at D-III McMurry

LCU Looks to End Two-Game Losing Streak

LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN (1-2, 0-1) at
MCMURRY (1-3)
Sunday, March 7 – 2 p.m.
Wilford Moore Stadium – Abilene, Texas

LADY CHAP HEADERS
  • Lubbock Christian is below the .500 mark for the first time since Sept. 20, 2019 when they were also 1-2, but they have a chance to get back on track Sunday at McMurry
  • This is LCU's only game on the schedule for the adjusted spring 2021 season that is not against a Lone Star Conference opponent. McMurry competes at the NCAA Division III level
  • All three Lubbock Christian goals so far this season have come from different players. Allison Scott, Faith Webber and Celia Duarte have all found the back of the net
  • LCU goalkeeper Hannah Wise has made 10 saves this year and allowed five goals. She has a goals against average of 1.67 and a save percentage of .667
  • Sophomore forward Celia Duarte leads the team with four points this season, having either scored or assisted on all three Lubbock Christian goals

HIT THE ROAD, CHAPS
Sunday will be LCU's second road game of the 2021 season, which will include two more this year. The Warhawks play their home games at Wilford Moore Stadium, which was opened all the way back in 1937 and is home to the school's football and track programs as well. In 2019, the team went 5-3-1 away from home, including a 4-1-1 road record in conference play. The Lady Chaps racked up 25 goals (2.78 per game) in road games while limiting opponents to just nine (1.00 per game). Duarte and Scott each scored four goals on the road, and Duarte tallied five of her assists in away games as well. Lubbock Christian's only road contest so far this year was a 3-1 loss at Angelo State.

ON THE ATTACK
While only three Lubbock Christian players have scored so far this season, five have put shots on goal and another five on top of that have attempted shots. Scott leads the way with seven total shots, five of which have been on goal. Her 2.33 shots per game is the seventh-best mark in the LSC. Duarte is second on the team with five shots and three on goal, while Faith Webber, Victoria Ramirez and Abbey Currie have all put one shot on goal apiece. Makenna Pate and Tegan Wilson each have three shots this season without putting one on frame.

GOOD HELPERS
Three players have recorded assists in the three games this spring, including two by Duarte, one by Maddie Hoel and one by Stephanie McClung. The two by Duarte were the ninth and 10th of her career, tying her for seventh in the LCU program record books, despite her just being a sophomore. Hoel's assist came in the game against UT Permian Basin, while McClung recorded hers in the Feb. 27 game against Angelo State for her first collegiate point.

SHOT-STOPPERS
Defensively, the Lady Chaps have limited their opponents to an average of 1.67 goals per game, ranking in the top half of the conference. Twice so far they have limited their opponent to one goal, although they do not have a shutout yet this year. LCU opponents are averaging 9.3 shots per game this year, having put 15 shots on goal in 28 attempts. And they have played tough defense without fouling too much, committing just 24 fouls to 27 by their opponents. Shadiana Haney has played the most minutes out of any LCU defender with 260 so far this season.

LAST LINE OF DEFENSE
The Lady Chaps have a wealth of experience in goal for them this season in keeper Hannah Wise. The Midlothian native and Preseason LSC Goalkeeper of the Year has been a four-year starter for the Lady Chaps, seeing action in 58 games across her career. She already has the program record for saves with 176, 10 of which have come this season. In her career (5218 minutes), she has allowed an average of exactly one goal per game while posting a save percentage of .752.

IN THE STANDS
For all home events at McMurry, each player and coach for both teams will receive two pass list spots for select guests, in an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19 with physical distancing in each venue. No walk-up spectators will be admitted at this time, but there will be limited tickets available for McMurry students, faculty, and staff. All venues, indoor and outdoor, will be social distanced by groups indicated on the pass list. Masking and social distancing between non-family members or roommates is required at all McMurry events, regardless of venue. Temperature and symptom checks are required before entry into the facility.

SCOUTING THE WAR HAWKS
  • McMurry is a member of the NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference, where they finished fourth last season with a program-record 12 wins, qualifying them for the ASC Championship Tournament
  • The War Hawks are riding a three-game losing streak, coming out on the wrong end of games against Hardin-Simmons, Louisiana Tech and Mary Hardin-Baylor
  • Hallie Rutherford leads the team in points, having scored twice and assisted on a third goal so far this season. McMurry has only been shut out once so far this spring
  • Head coach Charles Nobles joined the McMurry staff in 2016 as an assistant for both the women's and men's teams in 2016 before moving into the head coach's role in 2017
  • Four different goalkeepers have seen action for the War Hawks already this season, but Cindy Villasana has started the most games (three), posting a .727 save percentage in 248 mintues.

THE SERIES WITH MCMURRY
Lubbock Christian will be meeting with the War Hawks on the soccer field for the first time since Oct. 26, 2013, when the Lady Chaps ran away with a 4-1 victory, getting all four goals from four different players. LCU and McM faced off two times prior to that, with Lubbock Christian winning both of those meetings as well. The biggest win came by a score of 7-1 in LCU's inaugural 2010 season.
