BACK ON TRACK
The Lady Chaps bounced back from a two-game losing streak in a big was this past weekend, taking down McMurry 3-0 on the road for their first shutout of the season. LCU showed a balanced attack in the win, getting all three goals from three different players and all four assists from different players as well. McMurry was able to get off 10 shots in the loss, but only five were on goal and all were stopped by Wise as she and the Lady Chaps earned their first shutout since Nov. 12, 2019 when they shut out Angelo State in the first round of the LSC Tournament. LCU will now return to LSC play, taking on the Falcons of UT Permian Basin on the road Wednesday.
DUARTE'S DOMINANCE
Sophomore LCU forward
Celia Duarte has been on a tear to start the spring 2021 season, scoring twice and assisting a pair of other Lady Chap goals. She currently ranks tied for fifth in the LSC in points per game with 1.50 and is tied for fifth in shots on goal with seven this year. The Mansfield, Texas native already has her name in the program record books, currently ranking seventh on the all-time assist list with 10 in her career, despite having at least two years of playing time left. She has also averaged .48 assists per game and 1.33 points per game in the 21 games of her career.
PERFECTLY BALANCED
Although Duarte leads the team in points and shots this season, Lubbock Christian has provided a fairly balanced offensive attack. Five different players have scored so far this season, including
Allison Scott,
Stephanie McClung,
Faith Webber and
Makenna Pate. The goal from Pate was her first since Oct. 25, 2018, as she was forced to sit out all of the 2019 season with an injury. Five different players have also recorded assists this season, with Duarte and
Maddie Hoel leading the team with two apiece. LCU is averaging 1.5 goals on 9.75 shots per game, with both marks ranking seventh-best in the conference.
HIT THE ROAD, CHAPS
Wednesday will be LCU's third road game of the 2021 season, which will include one more this year. The Falcons play their home games at Falcon Field, which has an artificial turf playing surface. So far this year, the Lady Chaps are 1-1 when playing away from home, including the win Sunday against McMurry and a 3-1 loss at Angelo State in Feb. Duarte has scored both of her goals in road games and Wise has made 11 of her 15 total saves away from home. In 2019, LCU was 5-3-1 when playing on the road.
