Lady Chaps Closing Weekend Hosting Midwestern State

Midwestern State Has Dropped 34 Consecutive Road Games, But Their Last Road Win Was In Lubbock in 2019

LUBBOCK, Texas (April 11, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University wraps up a weekend of Lone Star Conference play Sunday with a doubleheader against Midwestern State with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at PlainsCapital Park.

LCU and MSU Series Snapshot
  • MSU has a 4-1 lead in the all-time series.
  • The three prior meetings have been in Lubbock (the first to were in Mansfield, Texas), where LCU is 1-2 against MSU.
  • The previous meeting resulted in a 4-2 MSU win on Feb. 3, 2019.
  • LCU's lone win in the all-time series was on Jan. 30, 2016 (7-2 LCU win in Lubbock, Texas).
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 23-10 this season and 11-7 in LSC play after sweeping a doubleheader Friday against Texas Woman's at home. LCU is in a three-way tie for sixth place in the LSC standings (9-7), alongside Angelo State.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .358 as a team (13th nationally, leads the LSC), with 36 home runs (eighth nationally and second in the LSC) in 31 games. LCU averages 6.6 runs a contest, ranking fourth in the LSC.
  • In the circle, LCU has an ERA of 1.79 (41st nationally). Opponents are hitting .211 against LCU this season and the team has 11 shutouts, co-leading the nation (with A&M-Commerce and Indianapolis).
  • On the field, LCU ranks sixth in the LSC with a .971 fielding percentage.
 
Who is Doing What?
  • Pitcher Taylor Franco is 12-4 this season with a 0.89 ERA in 109.2 innings pitched (also has two saves). Franco went 45.2 innings to start the season without allowing an earned run. She has 14 complete games (second nationally) and 66 strikeouts (eighth in the LSC). Opponents are hitting .196 against Franco, who is 33-14 in her LCU career (sixth player in program history with 30 wins). She is one of nine pitchers nationally to appear in 20 games this season. Her 12 wins ranks tied for 10th nationally. Franco opens the weekend with a 0.93 WHIP, ranking second in the LSC.
  • Brooke Makemson is hitting .414 on the season. She has a team-leading seven home runs (tied for ninth in conference) and has 32 RBI on the season (fifth in the LSC), and was named NFCA National Player of the Week on Feb. 9 after hitting .692 (9-for-13) at the LCU Invitational.
  • Savannah Wysocki, hitting .436 at the plate, has a team-leading 51 hits (ranks second nationally). She also has a conference-best 23 stolen bases on the season as well (seventh nationally). Wysocki has three triples this season, placing her with 15 in her LCU career to match the program career mark with Brittany Kent (2011-2012).
  • Skylar Herrera ranks second nationally with five triples, and also has six home runs and is 11th nationally in RBI (38).
  • Tyla Lee has 10 RBI over the past nine games (six on the season prior to the stretch) off a 14-for-28 (.500) performance at the plate in the span. She is hitting .405 overall on the season, with team-leading .490 on-base percentage (14th in the LSC).

Lone Star Conference Breakdown
  • This season is LCU's second season in the LSC.
  • LCU is 16-10 all-time in LSC play.
  • LCU is 11-7 this season in conference play, with a 7-3 record in conference home play.
    • LCU is hitting .349 in conference, with a 2.23 team ERA (both statistics rank second in the LSC for conference games).
    • Taylor Franco is 5-3 with a 1.47 ERA (opponents hitting .218) in LSC action.
    • Maxine Valdez is 3-2 with a 2.05 ERA and opponents are hitting .129 against her in conference.

  • Brooke Makemson had a 22-game hit streak earlier in the season, which is the longest by a Lady Chaps member this season and is the longest in program history.
  • Makemson also has the team's season-high mark of consecutive games reaching base safely at 25 games.
  • Athena Muniz has reached base safely in her last 15 games (team's active leader).
 
Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish sixth in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their seventh season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their second season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 16 softball programs in the LSC this season.
 
Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 11th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Sunday with a softball record of 441-138.
  • Along with surpassing 400 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
National Notes
  • LCU opened the season ranked No.19 in the NFCA Top 25 Preseason Poll.
  • The Lady Chaps bounced around between No.24 and No.25 before dropping out in early March.
  • The Lady Chaps went 8-0 last season against nationally ranked programs, but are 2-6 against nationally ranked programs this season. They did record a win (Mar. 26) at No.2 Texas A&M-Commerce to mark their first win in program history on the road at a top-five nationally ranked program.
 
 Looking at MSU
  • The Mustangs are 12-20 on the season (went 3-19 last season) and are 5-13 in conference after being swept Friday at Angelo State, which extended their losing streak to five games).
  • MSU is 0-13 on the road this season and have dropped their last 34 games on the road. Their last road win was in Lubbock on Feb. 3, 2019.
  • Midwestern State was preseason picked tied for 14th in the LSC Preseason Poll.
  • MSU ranks eighth nationally in double plays with 11 on the season.
  • Mattye Tyler ranks third in the LSC and 15th nationally with 10 doubles on the season. She is hitting .322 on the season, which is second on the Mustangs behind Shley Turner, who is hitting .383.
