SAN ANGELO, Texas (April 20, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University jumped out to an early lead with one run in each of the first five innings and held on to take down No. 5 Angelo State on the road Tuesday at Foster Field.
Â
The Chaps moved to 14-17 on the season with the win and have now split the season series with the Rams two games apiece.
Â
It was a bullpen day for the Chaparral pitching staff, but
Shandon Herrera was the first man on the mound for LCU, making his first appearance since April 2. He went to the mound already with a 1-0 lead, as the Chaps plated a first inning run on a walk, a single and an error.
Â
Herrera had a solid outing, working three scoreless frames while scattering three hits and a walk and striking out one. He earned the win, moving to 4-2 on the season.
Â
While he was still on the mound, the offense scored two more runs, plating one in the second and one in the third. In the second,
George Mendazona led off with a single and
Nolan Machibroda followed with a single of his own. The pair both advanced a base and
Grant Griffin drove in the run with a sacrifice fly.
Â
Colin Gordon scored in the third after back-to-back one out singles and an RBI groundout from
Mason Donohoe.
Â
Cannon Davis relieved Herrera and was the only other pitcher on the mound for multiple innings, hurling two scoreless frames.
Â
Lubbock Christian scored its final two runs while Davis was on the mound.
Larry Leitha walked and stole second with two outs in the fourth, advancing to third on a
Luis Navarro single and scoring on a wild pitch. Then in the fifth, Hernandez led off with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball, to third on a groundout and scoring on a Mendazona single threw the drawn-in infield.
Â
The run in the fifth would be the last the Chaps scored, but it would be enough for them to pull out the win.
Â
Peyton Hutson came on next and put up a zero in the sixth inning. The Rams finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh, scoring twice with two outs before
Logan Ellis got a flyout to end the rally.
Â
In the eighth, the Rams threatened with two outs again, this time against
Tyler Hardwick, but the righty struck out an ASU pinch hitter to end the frame.
Â
Koi Carrillo came out of the bullpen to close out the game in the ninth inning and loaded the bases with no outs. He got a fly out from Aaron Walters but then walked in a run. Facing Jordan Williams though, Carrillo got a ground ball that the Chap infield turned into a double play to close out the game.
