Opening Road Trip Doubleheader at St. Mary's Pushed to Saturday

LCU Plays Their Final Six Games of the Regular Season On The Road

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (April 24, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University returns to the road, where they will play their final six regular season games, beginning with a noon doubleheader against St. Mary's at St. Mary's Softball Stadium. The series was originally scheduled to begin Friday, but thunderstorms pushed the series to Saturday.

LCU and StMU Series Snapshot
  • StMU leads the all-time series over LCU, 20-16.
  • LCU is 6-15 all-time against StMU in San Antonio, winning their previous game played in San Antonio 2-1 on May 2, 2019, which was during the Heartland Conference Tournament.
  • The Lady Chaps have won the prior three meetings and all have been one-run decisions.
  • LCU went 2-0 against StMU last season in a Lone Star Conference series in Lubbock.
    • LCU came back from a 3-0 deficit in each game, with a 5-4 win in the opener and a 10-9 win in eight innings.
    • Alivia Villarreal had a walk-off single in the eighth inning of the second game to cap the walk-off win.
    • Angela Donaldson homered twice, and teammates Skylar Herrera (5-for-7) and Savannah Wysocki (6-for-8) combined to go 11-for-15 at-the plate.
    • Taylor Franco went 2-0 in the circle, garnering the win in each game.
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 26-13 this season and 14-10 in LSC play after splitting a doubleheader Sunday to Texas A&M International at home. LCU is in a four-way tie for sixth place in the LSC standings (14-10), alongside Cameron, Texas A&M International and West Texas A&M.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .352 as a team (ninth nationally, leads the LSC), with 42 home runs (eighth nationally and second in the LSC) in 39 games. They lead the nation in hits (364). LCU averages 6.36 runs a contest, ranking fifth in the LSC.
  • In the circle, LCU has an ERA of 1.88 (18th nationally), which leads the LSC. Opponents are hitting .224 against LCU this season and the team has 12 shutouts, which is tied for fourth in the nation and is second in the LSC (one behind A&M-Commerce).
  • On the field, LCU ranks fifth in the LSC with a .963 fielding percentage.
 
Who is Doing What?
  • Pitcher Taylor Franco is 13-6 this season with a 1.09 ERA in 128.1 innings pitched (also has two saves). Franco went 45.2 innings to start the season without allowing an earned run. She has 16 complete games (third nationally) and 80 strikeouts (sixth in the LSC). Opponents are hitting .203 against Franco, who is 34-16 in her LCU career (sixth player in program history with 30 wins). She is one of 12 pitchers nationally to appear in 23 games this season. Her 13 wins ranks tied for 18th nationally. Franco opened the weekend with a 0.99 WHIP, which is second in the LSC.
  • Brooke Makemson is hitting a team-best .426 on the season. She leads LCU with eight home runs (tied for ninth in conference) and has 35 RBI on the season (ninth in the LSC), and was named NFCA National Player of the Week on Feb. 9 after hitting .692 (9-for-13) at the LCU Invitational.
  • Savannah Wysocki, hitting .419 at the plate, has a team-leading 57 hits (ranks third nationally). She also has 25 stolen bases (second in conference) on the season as well (fifth nationally). Wysocki has three triples this season, placing her with 15 in her LCU career to match the program career mark with Brittany Kent (2011-2012).
  • Skylar Herrera ranks sixth nationally with five triples, and also has seven home runs and is 14th nationally in RBI (39).
  • Tyla Lee has 13 RBI over the past 14 games (six on the season prior to the stretch) off a 18-for-41 (.439) performance at the plate in the span. She is hitting .390 overall on the season, with a .470 on-base percentage (19th in the LSC).
  • Athena Muniz is 10th in the LSC in hits (44) and is hitting .393 on the season.

Lone Star Conference Breakdown
  • This season is LCU's second season in the LSC.
  • LCU is 19-13 all-time in LSC play.
  • LCU is 14-10 this season in conference play, with a 4-4 record in conference road play.
    • LCU is hitting .341 in conference, with a 2.26 team ERA (hitting ranks second in the conference and pitching ranks third in the LSC for conference games).
    • Taylor Franco is 6-5 with a 1.66 ERA (opponents hitting .224) in LSC action.
    • Maxine Valdez is 3-2 with a 2.39 ERA and opponents are hitting .147 against her in conference.
    • Savannah Wysocki is 34-for-80 (.425) with 11 extra-base hits in LSC play. She is second in the LSC with 17 stolen bases in conference play.

  • LCU is 4-6 in road play this season (8 of the 10 games played at teams currently ranked).
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .304 on the road, with a 3.00 ERA.
  • Taylor Franco (1-3) has a 1.56 ERA on the road, with four complete games.
  • Tyla Lee leads LCU on the road, hitting .448 (13-for-29).
  • Skyler Herrera leads LCU with 12 RBI on the road.
  • Angela Donaldson and Lee each have two of LCU's seven road home runs this season.
 
Streaking Along
  • Brooke Makemson is LCU's active hit-streak leader, as she enters Friday's games with a three-game active hit streak.
  • Makemson had a 22-game hit streak earlier in the season, which is the longest by a Lady Chaps member this season and is the longest in program history.
  • Makemson also has the team's season-high mark of consecutive games reaching base safely at 25 games.
  • Tyla Lee has reached base safely in her last 15 games (team's active leader).
 
Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish sixth in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their seventh season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their second season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 16 softball programs in the LSC this season.
 
Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 11th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Sunday with a softball record of 444-141.
  • Along with surpassing 400 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
National Notes
  • LCU opened the season ranked No.19 in the NFCA Top 25 Preseason Poll.
  • The Lady Chaps bounced around between No.24 and No.25 before dropping out in early March. They have been receiving votes since dropping out.
  • The Lady Chaps went 8-0 last season against nationally ranked programs, but are 2-8 against nationally ranked programs this season. They did record a win (Mar. 26) at No.2 Texas A&M-Commerce to mark their first win in program history on the road at a top-five nationally ranked program.
  • The NCAA released regional rankings of teams in the mix to possibly qualify for regionals, and LCU is in the mix of teams.
 
 Looking at StMU
  • The Rattlers are 16-18 on the season (went 11-18 last season) and are 11-11 in conference after being swept in a doubleheader at UT Tyler Sunday. StMU has droped their last four contests.
  • StMU is 9-5 at home this season, riding a five-game home win streak.
  • St. Mary's was preseason picked ninth in the LSC Preseason Poll, and they currently sit in 10th in the conference with their 11-11 conference mark.
  • The Rattlers lead the nation in double plays turned, with 19 on the season. They have forced opponents into grounding into double plays 13 times, while only hitting into one on the season.
  • Bari Christian leads the LSC in triples per game (.17) and her five on the season are tied for second in the LSC and tied for sixth nationally.
