Hardin-Simmons Marks First-Ever Division III Opponent on LCU's Home Turf

LUBBOCK, Texas (April 6, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University plays their final non-conference series of the season, as they face Hardin-Simmons for a doubleheader Tuesday with a 4 p.m. first pitch at PlainsCapital Park. LCU has never played a NCAA Division III opponent on their home field.

LUBBOCK, Texas (April 6, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University plays their final non-conference series of the season, as they face Hardin-Simmons for a doubleheader Tuesday with a 4 p.m. first pitch at PlainsCapital Park. 
 
LCU and HSU Series Snapshot
  • The two programs have never met.
  • LCU is 2-0 all-time against Division III programs, combining for a 31-6 scoring advantage against Division III foes.
  • The last game against a Division III opponent was Mar. 10, 2011, as LCU defeated Lakeland College (Wisc.) 13-4 in Tucson, Ariz.
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 19-10 this season and 9-7 in LSC play after splitting a doubleheader Mar. 28 at No.6 UT Tyler. LCU is in a three-way tie for sixth place in the LSC standings (9-7), alongside West Texas A&M and Angelo State.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .342 as a team (21st nationally, third in LSC), with 30 home runs (13th nationally and third in the LSC) in 29 games. LCU averages 6.3 runs a contest, ranking fifth in the LSC.

Opponents are hitting .182 against Franco, who is 31-14 in her LCU career (sixth player in program history with 30 wins). She is one of 15 pitchers nationally to appear in 18 games this season. Her 10 wins ranks tied for 15th nationally. Franco opens the week with a 0.88 WHIP, ranking 35th nationally (second in the LSC).
  • Brooke Makemson is hitting .364 on the season. She has a team-leading six home runs (ninth in conference) and has 26 RBI on the season (ninth in the LSC), and was named NFCA National Player of the Week on Feb. 9 after hitting .692 (9-for-13) at the LCU Invitational.
  • Savannah Wysocki, hitting .427 at the plate, has a team-leading 44 hits (ranks fourth nationally). She also has 20 stolen bases on the season as well (sixth nationally). Wysocki has three triples this season, placing her with 15 in her LCU career to match the program career mark with Brittany Kent (2011-2012).
  • Skylar Herrera ranks sixth nationally with four triples, and also has four home runs and is 16th in RBI (33).
  • Tyla Lee has three home runs in her last five games played, with seven RBI in the span off a 9-for-16 (.563) performance at the plate in the span. She is hitting .403 overall on the season.
 
 Home Sweet Home
  • LCU is 266-34 (88.7%) all-time in home games at PlainsCapital Park.
  • Last season, LCU was 13-1 at home.
  • They are 10-4 at home this season.
  • LCU is hitting .361 at home with 20 home runs and 6.6 runs per game. Brooke Makemson is hitting .488 with five home runs and 19 RBI at home.
  • Athena Muniz is hitting .474 with eight extra-base hits (five home runs) and 13 RBI at home.
  • Taylor Franco is 6-1 at home with a 0.77 ERA, and opponents are hitting .140 against her (22 hits allowed in 45.1 innings pitched). Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish sixth in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their seventh season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their second season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 16 softball programs in the LSC this season.
 
Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 11th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Sunday with a softball record of 437-138.
  • Along with surpassing 400 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
National Notes
  • LCU opened the season ranked No.19 in the NFCA Top 25 Preseason Poll.
  • The Lady Chaps bounced around between No.24 and No.25 before dropping out in early March.
  • The Lady Chaps went 8-0 last season against nationally ranked programs, but are 2-6 against nationally ranked programs this season. They did record a win (Mar. 26) at No.2 Texas A&M-Commerce to mark their first win in program history on the road at a top-five nationally ranked program.
 
 Looking at HSU
  • The Cowgirls are 9-13 on the season (went 8-10 last season) and are members of the American Southwest Conference, where they are 5-7 and coming off a series split with Concordia (Texas) in a series played in Austin, Texas.
  • HSU is 5-2 in their last seven games and are 2-9 in road play on the season.
  • Hardin-Simmons was preseason picked third in the West Division of the ASC Preseason Poll.
  • Kate Tovar leads the ASC with a pace of 0.69 walks per game, as she has been walked 13 times this season. HSU averages 2.5 walks per game and being hit-by-pitch 0.7 times per game.
  • Brittanie Henry leads the Cowgirls and ranks in the top-30 nationally with 14 stolen bases on the season.
