Extra! Extra! ... Franco Completes No-Hitter in LCU Home Opener

Taylor Franco Faces One Over The Minimum To Complete

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 10, 2022) – Seven of Lubbock Christian University's nine hits were for extra bases, including a trio of home runs, but it was the hits not allowed stealing the spotlight in the Lady Chaparrals home opener Thursday evening at PlainsCapital Park. Pitcher Taylor Franco recorded LCU's 19th no-hitter in program history and LCU improved to 15-0 all-time in home openers with an 8-0 win in five innings over Oklahoma Baptist.

LCU Highlights:
Turning Point:
Kamryn Gibbs hit a solo home run in the third inning, which provided LCU a 1-0 lead, and it was the first of three home runs hit in the inning.

How it Happened:
Savannah Wysocki led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple, but she would remain stranded, as OBU pitcher Kayleigh Jones retired the next three batters. She would retire the next seven batters before rolling into the third inning to face Gibbs with one out. Gibbs went deep to centerfield for her first home run of the season (third of her career).

Gibbs' hit would be the first of six in the inning. Wysocki and Skylar Herrera doubled before Kasey Franco and Tyla Lee hit back-to-back home runs for a 5-0 lead. An error on a pop-up allowed Brooke Makemson to reach, and she scored on a single by Angela Donaldson. LCU ended up with six runs off six hits and five of the six were for extra bases.

Gibbs led off the fourth inning with a single and scored on a double hit by Wysocki, who later score on a sacrifice fly by Herrera for an 8-0 advantage in the fourth inning.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Taylor Franco, improving to 2-0 on the season and 37-18 in her career, faced one batter over the minimum and produced six strikeouts. Her pitching led to eight groundouts and no flyouts.
  • Five of LCU's eight runs were two-out RBI, with Kasey Flores driving in two of the two-out RBI. She has seven of her nine RBI this season produced with two outs.
  • LCU was 8-of-15 (.533) with runners in scoring position. They were 9-for-18 (.500) with runners on base.
  • The Lady Chaps seven extra-base hits are a season high and the most since they had eight extra-base hits April 9, 2021 vs. Texas Woman's.
  • Savannah Wysocki hit her 17th triple of her LCU career, which is the program's career high mark and it actively leads NCAA Division II for career triples.
  • LCU improved to 22-4 all-time against OBU (8-0 in Lubbock).
No-Hitter Notes:
  • Taylor Franco's no-hitter was the third of her career (2/15/19 – vs. Southwest).
  • The no-hitter was the third time all-time in which LCU no-hit Oklahoma Baptist.
  • LCU's no-hitter is their second on a home opener. In their inaugural game in 2008, LCU  no-hit Southwest to open their existence.
