PORTALES, N.M. (February 17, 2022) –
Ashton Duncan surpassed 1,000 career points with four three-pointers and No.13 Lubbock Christian University used a hot start from Duncan to surge to a 66-43 non-conference win Thursday night at Greyhound Arena.
Duncan, entering the game with 999 career points, quickly pushed the milestone aside with a three-pointer 25-seconds into the contest. The trey was one of three three-pointers in the first quarter for Duncan, who made her first two attempts. ENMU's Natalie Stice had the Greyhounds opening bucket on their first attempt from the field, but then ENMU followed missing their next six attempts. LCU took advantage with a 15-0 run.
LCU had an 18-2 lead in the opening 6:16 of the game, as
Grace Foster, Macie Maddox and Duncan (three) combined to knock down five three-pointers for 15 of the 18 points. The other three points were off an old fashioned three-point play by
Channing Cunyus.
ENMU ended a nearly six-minute dry spell with a 6-0 run before
Whitney Cox scored a layup for LCU to provide the Lady Chaps a 20-8 lead at the end of the opening frame. LCU was 5-of-11 (45.5%) from long range in the first quarter.
The Greyhounds kept the Lady Chaps off the scoreboard for the first 4:35 of the quarter and without a field goal for the opening 5:55 of the frame. The dry spell was ended by the Robertson sisters, as both
Juliana Robertson and
Audrey Robertson combined for an 8-0 LCU run to turn a 20-12 lead into a 28-12 advantage. LCU closed the half on an 11-2 run, as Cunyus dialed in a three-pointer from the top of the key prior to the halftime horn for a 31-14 lead at the break.
Eastern trimmed the LCU advantage to 31-18 with a 4-0 start to the second half, but two minutes into the second half, LCU's
Laynee Burr and
Audrey Robertson split the scoring of LCU's next eight points. Burr and Robertson's efforts spurred a 16-2 run, which included six points from
Grace Foster, and LCU pushed the lead to 47-20 with 3:24 left in the third quarter. Foster finished with 10 points in the quarter and LCU, shooting 64.3% (9/14) in the quarter, led 53-27 heading into the fourth quarter.
LCU (22-5) dressed 15 players and all 15 saw action in the fourth quarter.
Maci Maddox put LCU up 64-32 for their largest lead of the game (with 4:30 left in the game), but it would turnout to be LCU's final field goal in the game. ENMU closed the game on an 11-2 run, including scoring the final eight points of the game.
Duncan finished the game 4-of-7 from long range and with 12 points. She is the second Lady Chaps member this season to hit the 1,000-point mark in career scoring (joining
Allie Schulte). LCU was led in the scoring by Foster, who had 13 points off 6-of-9 shooting.
LCU held ENMU (9-12) to 31.5% shooting (17/54) from the field and to a 17.6% (3/17) shooting mark from the perimeter. Stice was the only Greyhounds member in double figures and led the team with 10 points.
The Lady Chaps improved to 17-24 all-time against ENMU and 5-16 inside Greyhound Arena. LCU has now won 13 of the last 16 meetings head-to-head.
TURNING POINT
Trailing 18-2, ENMU had a chance to climb back into the game, as they held LCU to one field goal for early 10 minutes. They cut the deficit to 20-8 to start the second quarter and kept the Lady Chaps without a field goal for the first 5:55 of the second quarter, but they were only able to get the deficit to 20-12. ENMU missed six consecutive shots (once trailing 20-8), which included a trio of three-point attempts. LCU was 1-of-9 from the field during their woeful sequence, but they responded with an 8-0 run.
