Game 1

LCU Highlights:

Turning Point:
With the game tied 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning, WT exploded for a nine-run inning.

How it Happened:
WT jumped out on the scoreboard first. Brittni Rufus reached on a single and was manufactured home on a sacrifice fly by Diana Murtha for a 1-0 lead.

Savannah Wysocki opened the home half of the first inning with a single, but LCU would go hitless in their next nine at-bats. Tiarra Delrosario ended the sequence leading off the fourth inning with a single. A two-out bloop single down the left field line by Skylar Herrera tied the game 1-1.

In the sixth inning, Madison Johnson would lead off the inning with a solo home run and it was one of two home runs she hit in the same inning. Rufus joined Johnson's second home run with a home run in her second at-bat of the inning for back-to-back home runs. WT would end up with nine runs off seven hits in the inning.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Taylor Franco suffered her first loss of the season (10-1) and the run allowed in the first inning was her first run allowed at home and it ended a sequence of 25.1 innings pitched at home to start the season without allowing a run (earned or unearned).
  • The loss ended LCU's win streak at 18 games and it was their first conference loss of the season. The win streak had been the longest since a 19-game streak in 2014 and the win streak (4-0) to start conference play had been their longest since 2015.
  • LCU did not have an extra-base hit in the game, marking the second time this season in which they were held without an extra-base hit.

Game 2

LCU Highlights:
Turning Point:
Mattye Tyler pitched the final 2.1 innings and held the Lady Buffs to one hit. She entered the circle in the fifth inning as the Lady Buffs had scored six unanswered runs and stopped their offense while LCU's bats rallied.

How it Happened:
LCU roughed up pitcher Emilee Wilson with a five-run second inning. LCU sent nine batters to the plate in the inning, as the first four batters reached. Savannah Wysocki had a single off the right field fence to open the scoring. LCU had the bases loaded with no outs, but was unable to add to the lead until Tyla Lee hit a two-out grand slam for a 5-0 LCU lead.

Rufus opened the Lady Buffs scoring in the top of the third inning. She hit a ball misjudged in the outfield, leading to a two-out triple and it led to a three-run inning. Johnson had an RBI to make it 5-4 in the top of the fourth, and WT continued with a two-run fifth inning for a 6-5 lead.

Kasey Flores led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double. With no outs, Angela Donaldson and Athena Muniz each drove in a run before Wysocki closed the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Mattye Tyler claimed the win in relief (3-0) and Maxine Valdez. She had a stretch during her relief outing in which she retired six straight batters and seven of the last eight batters faced.
  • Tyla Lee's grand slam home run (team-co-leading sixth of the season and 13th in her career) was LCU's first grand slam of the season and the first since Skylar Herrera hit one on Feb. 20, 2021 against Fort Lewis College.
  • Savannah Wysocki hit her first sacrifice fly of the season and she is the seventh different Lady Chap to record a sac fly this season.
  • Lee produced her team-leading 12th multi-hit game this season.
  • Tiarra Delrosario extended her hit streak to 15 games, which is the longest by a Lady Chap this season. Delrosario joins Herrera with a 16-game streak of reaching base safely (longest this season by a Lady Chap).
  • LCU improved to 4-2 this season against nationally ranked programs.

HISTORICAL NOTE
LCU moved to 10-17 all-time against West Texas A&M. The Lady Chaps are now 7-8 in games played at home against WT.

LCU remains home Monday at 1 and 3 p.m. for a Lone Star Conference doubleheader against Eastern New Mexico.
