Game 1
LCU Highlights:
Turning Point:
The turning point of the game would have to be the final out of the game, as it prevented a huge turning point. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and LCU leading 11-10, Cameron had the tying and lead run on base, when a fly ball to left-centerfield gap was caught by a diving
Savannah Wysocki to win the game for LCU.
How it Happened:
LCU's first seven batters all reached base and scored to open the game. It all started with a leadoff triple by
Savannah Wysocki and culminated into a cycle of hits in the inning, as pair of singles was followed by a two-run double from
Skylar Herrera and a three-run home run from
Athena Muniz to complete the scoring surge.
Cameron was able to rally back. In the bottom of the second inning, the Aggies were able to score six runs off just two hits, as a pair of bases-loaded walks and a hit batter led to runs scoring.
Kamyrn Gibbs belted a two-out two-run home run for the Lady Chaps in the third inning, which was followed by a two-run home run by
Brooke Makemson in the fourth inning for an 11-6 lead.
Cameron trimmed the deficit to three runs (11-8) in the bottom of the fifth inning. Breley Webb hit a leadoff home run and a two-out single was followed by Kaiden Boren triple for a two-run inning. The Aggies were not done on their comeback bid, as they scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut LCU's lead to 11-10.
A pair of walks to leadoff the bottom of the seventh inning was setting the stage for a Cameron win, but LCU pitcher
Maxine Valdez was able to maneuver out of the jam and record the save by registering a strikeout, forcing a pop-up and receiving a game-saving defensive play by Wysock, who made a diving catch to win the game.
Inside the Numbers:
- Taylor Franco had her roughest outing of the season, but was able to persevere and receive offensive support to garner the win to improve to 10-0 on the season.
- Friday, Maxine Valdez recorded her first save of the season and first since Mar. 8, 2020. She did not have to wait as long since Friday's save, as she registered a save Saturday for her second of the season. She went 2.0 innings and did not allow a run off two hits.
- Savannah Wysocki hit her team-leading fifth triple of the season, which has her with a program-career record 20 in her LCU career. The mark leads all active NCAA Division II student-athletes.
- LCU had a trio of home runs in the game, as Brooke Makemson (fourth of season, 14th of LCU career), Athena Muniz (first of the season and ninth of her career) and Kamryn Gibbs (fourth of season and sixth of her career) each went deep.
- Skylar Herrera was 2-for-3 with runners in scoring position, which included going 1-for-1 with the bases loaded. Makemson was 2-for-2 with at-bats with runners on base, as LCU was 7-for-16 in at-bats with runners on base and 6-for-12 in at-bats with runners in scoring position.
Game 2
LCU Highlights:
Turning Point:
LCU scored 10 consecutive runs, producing a five-run sixth and seventh inning, with the seventh inning featuring three home runs. The 10 combined runs were much needed, as Cameron closed the game with a six-run ninth inning.
How it Happened:
Cameron tallied the first run of the game off a solo home run by Josie Swafford in the second inning. LCU responded to the run with a three-run top of the third inning.
Brooke Makemson doubled in a run and
Skylar Herrera followed with a single to put LCU up 3-1.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Kylie French singled in a run to cut LCU's lead to 3-2. The Lady Chaps would again have a response in the ensuing half inning, as Lee hit a two-run base hit to cap a five run fifth inning. That was followed by another five-run inning in the sixth inning, which was home run fueled.
Angela Donaldson (solo), Hannah Wells (solo) and
Tyla Lee (three run) all hit a home run in the inning for a 13-2 advantage.
The lead seemed safe, and it was able withstand a six-run bottom of the seventh inning by the Aggies. Cameron received a three-run home run by Karis Clark and they followed with a trio of doubles. Although not a save situation, LCU had to re-enter pitcher
Maxine Valdez and she closed the door to stamp the win for the Lady Chaps.
Inside the Numbers:
- Mattye Tyler made her first start in the circle for the Lady Chaps. She improved to 2-0, holding the Aggies to two runs off seven hits in 4.2 innings. Valdez's time in relief spanned 2.1 innings and she struck out four batters while allowing one hit.
- For a second consecutive game, LCU hit a trio of home runs. Hannah Wells (first collegiate home run), Tyla Lee (fifth of the season and 12th in her career) and Angela Donaldson (first of the season and 12th of her career). LCU has nine players with at least one home run on the season.
- Tyla Lee posted a five-RBI game for the second time this season.
- Kasey Flores walked four times, marking the most by a Lady Chap since Megan Darling walked four times on Feb. 4, 2018 against UT Permian Basin.
