LAWTON, Oklahoma (April 16, 2022) – Although most of the runs were unearned, Lubbock Christian University scored 10 of them on Saturday afternoon for a run-rule win in the series finale against Cameron.
Â
The Chaps (29-13, 27-13 LSC) held the Aggies (13-27, 13-25 LSC) to just four hits and a .174 batting average as
Ty Stephenson and
Cade Acrey combined for the third LCU shutout of the season.
Â
Eduardo Acosta got things going early for the Chaps with a leadoff single, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt and scoring on a single from
Luis Navarro to give Lubbock Christian quick lead. Navarro ended up scoring on an error from the catcher, and
Mason Donohoe scored before the inning ended for the first unearned run of the ball game.
Â
Stephenson walked the first batter he faced but bounced back with three straight groundouts for a shutdown inning. In the second, Lubbock Christian added a run when Acosta blasted a two-out triple and scored on a single from
George Mendazona.
Â
In the top of the third
Jarred Gibson singled and
Carson Ogilvie doubled with one out, followed by a
Grant Griffin walk with two outs, but a groundout with two outs ended the third.
Â
Acosta scored a third time in the top of the fourth, getting on base with a hit-by-pitch and advancing again on a Mendazona sac bunt. He advanced to third on a groundout and came to the plate on a based ball.
Â
Thanks to another hit-by-pitch to Ogilvie in the fifth, LCU added another run. They went scoreless in the sixth, but finished off the double-digit scoring effort in the top of the seventh.
Â
Gibson reached base thanks to a strikeout-wild pitch and advanced on a bunt single by Ogilvie.
Will Buchholz pinch hit and reached base on an error to bring up Griffin, who singled to drive in two. The outfielder then stole second and forced another error that scored both him and Buchholz.
Â
After a sixth inning that featured a strikeout, a flyout and a groundout, Acrey got three flyouts in the seventh to close out the run-rule win.
