LUBBOCK, Texas (April 24, 2022) – Lubbock Christian University wrapped up its home slate in the regular season Sunday, beating UT Permian Basin 10-0 for their sixth-straight double-digit win.
Â
The Chaps (33-13, 31-13) used the same one-two punch of
Ty Stephenson and
Cade Acrey on the mound that they did last Sunday, as the pair combined to shut out the Falcons (12-33, 11-33) on just five hits and no walks.
Â
Stephenson was the starter in the game and had a fantastic outing, pitching 6.1 after he and 13 other graduating LCU players were recognized prior to the start of the game. In the first inning, the right-hander got a couple of groundouts before allowing a single and then struck out Oswaldo Godina to end the frame. He would strike out just one more batter in the win but induce 12 groundouts from UTPB. Stephenson allowed three more hits and had a batter reach on an error, but no UT Permian Basin player made it further than first base in the game.
Â
The Chaparral starter was able to work with the lead for the majority of the game, after his offense scored five runs in the bottom of the second. UTPB hurler Trever Berg had started the game well, sitting LCU down in order in the first and got weak contact from
Larry Leitha to start the second, but the sky-high popup moved wildly in the northeast wind, landing just in front of the mound for an infield double.
Â
Mason Donohoe followed with a bloop single and
Carson Ogilvie walked to load the bases.
Cayde Ward pushed in the first run with a walk of his own, before
Edgar Hernandez cleared the bases with a triple to right center. Hernandez came into score on a groundout before Berg finally escaped the inning.
Â
Lubbock Christian went scoreless again in the third and fourth frames, but added two in the fifth.
Eduardo Acosta led things off with a bunt single, stealing second and scoring on a single by
George Mendazona. Mendazona was then running on the pitch when
Luis Navarro grounded out to third, but heads up base-running had the Chap third basemen moving around to third. They tried to nab him there, but an errant throw allowed Mendazona to score.
Â
The final three runs to reach the run-rule margin came in the sixth, as Ward hit a one-out single and Hernandez was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Acosta was at the plate but injured himself on a 2-2 county. Ready when he name was called,
Caden Hensley came on and immediately slapped a single through the left side for one run. Mendazona walked to load the bases, and an error after a hard ground ball by Navarro gave the Chaps the final two runs.
Â
Acrey came on after Stephenson got one out in the seventh to close out the game. He got a flyout on the first pitch he threw, gave up a single, but induced a groundout to end the game.
