LUBBOCK, Texas -  George Garcia and Bryce Spencer set school records, while Lauren Guthrie sets an historic mark on the first day of the 2023 indoor track season at the opening day of the Corky Classic on Friday, Jan. 13.

In his first career collegiate race, Garcia finished first in the 400-meter run with a time of 48.37 seconds, smashing the old indoor record by 0.26 set by Keitron Boyd at the 2022 Jarvis Scott Open. The freshman won his heat by 0.97 of a second, and won the overall event of 38 competitors by 0.25 seconds, finishing ahead of eight Division-I racers and six Lone Star Conference runners. The mark is also an NCAA provisional mark and the third-fastest in all of Division-II as of press time.

On his fourth throw of the season, Spencer set a new school record in the weight throw with a toss of 18.77 meters. The mark beats his old school record of 18.69 meters set at the 2022 Jarvis Scott Open. It is also an NCAA provisional mark, and is the 11th best mark in all of Division-II. Spencer finished fourth overall, beating out 12 Division-I competitors.

Despite finishing 13th overall, Guthrie made history for the Lady Chaps at Texas Tech. By recording a clearance of 3.03 meters, she becomes the first ever Lady Chap to record a mark in the pole vault in NCAA indoor competition. The Lady Chaps have been competing in NCAA indoor track since 2017.
