LUBBOCK, Texas – Both
Cayden Butler and
Kevin Washington recorded top-10 finishes in their events at the Texas Tech Open on Saturday, Jan. 28.
Butler finished sixth in the high jump, clearing 2.05 meters on his second jump at that mark. That mark is just 0.02 meters from tying the school record held by Butler. The mark is also an NCAA provisional mark, the 24
th best clearance in all of Division-II. Butler beat out other jumpers from no. 22 Ohio State and no. 4 West Texas A&M, along with Division-I competitors from Auburn, Air Force and Indiana. It is Butler's third straight top-10 finish in the event.
Washington finished ninth overall and first in his flight with a jump of 14.65 meters in the triple jump. The top-10 finish is Washington's 14
th straight top-10 finish overall in the event, and his fifth straight top-10 finish in the event during the indoor season. Washington beat out competitors from no. 10 Nebraska, along with Division-I jumpers from Arizona, Air Force and Boise State.
In a late addition for the Chaps,
Madelyn Merrell competed in the mile run, finishing 15
th with a time of 5:18.84. That mark is just over two seconds away from tying her personal best. Merrell finished fifth in her heat, beating out runners from Texas Tech, SMU, and UT-Rio Grande Valley.
The LCU track & field teams will return to Albuquerque for the New Mexico Collegiate Classic. Action begins on Feb. 3 from the ABQ Convention Center.
