LUBBOCK, Texas - Cayden Butler captured gold for the first time in his career in the high jump, while
Kevin Washington set a new record in the triple jump on day two of the Jarvis Scott Open.
Butler won the first event championship of his career, taking first place in the high jump with a clearance of 2.02 meters. Butler earned the victory after winning a jump-off against Alan Palmer of Tarleton State. The sophomore beat out 18 other jumpers, with 14 of those coming from Division-I schools.
Washington broke his own school record in the triple jump for the second week in a row and for the third time this season, finishing sixth with a jump of 15.00 meters. That mark moves Washington up to 15
th in Division-II in the event. He was the top D-II jumper in the event, finishing above competitors from TCU, Prairie View A&M, Incarnate Word and Sam Houston State among others.
Nathaniel Luna set a personal best and recorded a top-10 finish in the 200-meter run, finishing sixth with a time of 21.77 seconds. That mark is just 0.08 seconds away from an NCAA provisional time. Luna finished first in his heat by 0.51 seconds, beating out runners from Angelo State and UT-Rio Grande Valley. He was also the highest D-II finisher in the event, beating out runners from TCU, West Texas A&M, BYU, and Abilene Christian.
Joy Egwu set a personal best in the 200-meter run, finishing the race in 25.68 seconds, beating her old personal best by almost 0.50 seconds.
Kamille Boyd also set a personal best in the race, finishing the event in 26.00 seconds, beating her old mark by 0.17 seconds.
Kiley Cummings ran the 200-meter for the first time in her career, finishing with a time of 26.72 seconds.
In the 4x400 meter relay, the team of
Jozlyn Arana, Cummings,
Reanna Argullin and Egwu finished ninth, just missing out on a school record mark with a time of 3:56.96. The quartet finished second in their heat, and beat out teams from Texas Tech, Prairie View A&M, Incarnate Word, Tarleton State, and UTRGV.
On the men's side, the marathon of
Ryan Gordon,
Chris Rader,
Keitron Boyd and
George Garcia finished ninth in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:16.59. The group beat out teams from Incarnate Word, Abilene Christian, TCU, and UTRGV among others.
The Chaps will now prepare for the Lone Star Conference Championships that will be held in the same building next weekend. Festivities begin on Saturday, Feb. 18 from the Sports Performance Center on the campus of Texas Tech.
