Spencer set school record twice with two record-breaking throws

LUBBOCK, Texas - Bryce Spencer demolished his own school record in the weight throw with a top-15 national mark at the Matador Qualifier on Friday, Feb. 17.

Spencer broke his own record in the weight throw by 0.71 meters with a mark of 19.67 meters on his third throw of the day. His first throw of 19.00 meters would've also broken his old record of 18.96 meters set earlier this season at the UNM Team Open. Spencer recorded a second place finish behind Max McKhann of Stanford. The Sundown native beat out throwers from Texas Tech, Abilene Christian, and South Plains College among others.

Abigail Jones picked up her second straight top-10 finish in the weight throw, finishing tenth with a toss of 13.82 meters on her third throw of the day. Jones was the highest Division-II finisher in the event.

Candice Mackie just missed out on a top-10 finish in the long jump, finishing eleventh with a mark of 5.01 meters. That ties her highest career finish in the event, as Mackie finished eleventh at the 2022 Rumble in the Jungle Invitational. Reagan Hale just missed on a personal best in the long jump by 0.02 meters, finishing with a mark of 4.58 meters.

Julia Nelson ran right by her old personal best in the mile, finishing 12th with a time of 5:48.93. That mark beats her old personal best set in the same building at the Corky Classic by almost 15 seconds.
Her teammate Angel Avendano also set a personal best in the event with a time of 4:51.09.

Reagan Hale competed in the 60-meter run for the first time in her career, finishing with a time of 8.84 seconds.

The Chaps now turn their attention towards the LSC Indoor Championships beginning on Saturday, Feb. 18. Events start at 11:00 AM from the Sports Performance Center, with the entire meet being streamed on the Lone Star Conference Digital Network.
