LUBBOCK, Texas - Bryce Spencer won his first career Lone Star Conference Indoor Championship in the weight throw as LCU wrapped up competition on day one at the conference championship event on Saturday, Feb. 18.
Spencer won by 0.19 meters, recording a toss of 19.21 meters on his first throw. His second throw of 19.08 meters would've also won the championship by 0.06 meters. This is Spencer's first indoor conference championship after finishing third in the event last season.
The men's team earned three points in the distance medley relay, as the group of
Luke Mosley,
Landon Bowers,
Riley Webb and
Hagen Sage finished sixth with a time of 10:57.52. The quartet finished above Angelo State and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The men finished the day with 13 points and sit in seventh place.
The women's team is in ninth place after scoring four points in the distance medley relay, as the quartet of
Sheyla Vilca,
Michaelle Sime,
Sydney Jones and
Chloe Trull finished fifth with a time of 13:12.27. The foursome finished above Angelo State, UT Tyler, and Oklahoma Christian.
In the pentathlon,
Coulter Reel set a new school record for points scored, finishing ninth with a total score of 2886 points. Reel tied her school record in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing ninth with a time of 9.94 seconds. She broke her own record in the high jump, clearing 1.52 meters, beating her old mark by 0.02 meters with a sixth place finish. The freshman also finished ninth in the shot put with a personal best toss of 8.33 meters, while also setting a personal best in the long jump with a mark of 4.58 meters. Reel closed out the day with a personal best time in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.46.
Nathaniel Luna set a new school record in the 60-meter run, finishing seventh in the prelims with a time of 6.83 seconds. That time beats the old record mark by 0.04 seconds set last week. It is the second time this season that Luna has broken the school record in the event. Luna also set a personal best in the 200-meter run, recording a time of 21.75 seconds.
George Garcia qualified for the finals in the 400-meter run with a time of 47.61 seconds. That time was the fastest of any runner in the prelims, beating out Ja'Qualon Scott of Texas A&M-Kingsville by 0.15 seconds. That time was just 0.02 seconds away from tying his own school record in the event.
Chris Rader also qualified for the finals in the 400-meter run, finishing seventh with a time of 49.17 seconds, setting a new personal best by 0.20 seconds.
Joy Egwu just missed out on qualifying for the finals of the 60-meter run, but she did set a new school record in the event, beating her old time by 0.03 seconds with a time of 7.70 seconds. That time is also 0.04 seconds from an NCAA provisional mark. Egwu also set a personal best in the 200-meter run, recording a time of 25.15 seconds.
Kamille Boyd set a personal best in the event as well, recording a time of 25.83 seconds.
Madelyn Merrell qualified for the finals in the 800-meter run, finishing fourth with a time of 2:20.37 in the prelims. Merrell finished second in the event at the conference indoor championships last season.
Keitron Boyd qualified for the finals of the 200-meter run, finishing seventh in the prelims with a time of 21.61. Boyd beat out Verrell McBride of Oklahoma Christian by 0.01 seconds.
Dustin Bryant finished tenth in the long jump with a distance of 6.46 meters.
Paityn Green picked up a top-10 finish in the weight throw, finishing tenth with a toss of 12.96 meters.
Landon Bowers finished tenth with a personal best time in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing the race with a time of 8.45 seconds.
Jozlyn Arana nabbed herself a top-10 finish in the 400-meter run, finishing tenth with a time of 57.80 seconds.
Trull finished ninth in the 5000-meter run with a time of 19:43.84. Her teammate
Hailey Lowery finished tenth with a personal best time of 20:04.00.
Boyd beat her personal best in the 60-meter run for the second straight week, beating her old personal best time by 0.07 seconds with a time of 7.90 seconds. Sime also set a personal best in the event with a time of 8.08 seconds.
Ryan Gordon set a personal best in the 60-meter run, finishing with a time of 7.05 seconds, beating his old personal best set at the MLK Invitational by 0.01 seconds.
In the pole vault,
Lauren Guthrie finished tied for tenth with a clearance of 3.06 meters.
West Texas A&M sits in first place on the men's and women's standings, with 85 points on the men's side and 68.5 points on the women's side.
The Chaps look to climb up the leaderboard tomorrow, Feb. 18 on the final day of the LSC Indoor Championships. Action begins from the Sports Performance Center at 10:30 AM.
