LUBBOCK, Texas - George Garcia,
Kevin Washington, and the men's 4x400 meter relay team picked up gold medals as LCU wrapped up competition at the Lone Star Conference Indoor Championships on Sunday, Feb. 19.
Garcia made history in the men's 400-meter run, winning the race with a time of 47.29 seconds. That time beats his school record mark in the event by 0.30 seconds. Garcia beat Brien Pittman of West Texas A&M by 0.23 seconds. Garcia's time is also the eighth fastest time in Division-II when adjusted for altitude (47.40 seconds). His time would be the second-fastest in the country on a non-elevated track.
Garcia was also part of history in the men's 4x400 meter relay, as the team of himself,
Ryan Gordon,
Chris Rader and
Keitron Boyd won the event championship with a time of 3:12.90. The quartet upset the team from West Texas A&M by 0.20 seconds. The mark also breaks the school record in the event set in 1972 at the Astrodome by 0.02 seconds. When adjusted for elevation, the group holds the 12th fastest time in the country (3:13.34).
Washington continued his strong indoor season, winning the conference championship in the triple jump with a mark of 14.72 meters on his fourth jump of the day. He was second in the prelims behind Josh Body of Angelo State, but passed him to win the event in the finals. It is Washington's fifth top-10 finish in the triple jump this indoor season.
As a team, the LCU men finished fifth overall with 53 points. The Lady Chaps finished eighth overall with 18 points.
The quartet of
Jozlyn Arana,
Kiley Cummings,
Michaelle Sime and
Joy Egwu set a new school record in the 4x400 meter relay, finishing fifth and scoring four points with a time of 3:53.16. That time smashes the school record by over two seconds. It is also an NCAA provisional mark, and is the 56th fastest time in Division-II.
Madelyn Merrell scored three points with a sixth place finish in the mile. Merrell's time of 5:13.62 is a new personal best and is just 1.54 seconds away from tying the school record. The Idalou native also picked up four points with a fifth place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.81. Merrell's total score of nine points is the most of any Lady Chap this weekend.
Rader finished fifth in the 400-meter run with a personal best time of 48,96 seconds, scoring four points. Rader finished the weekend with the second-most points on the men's side with 14. Garcia's 20 total points were the most of the LCU men's team.
Nathan Karseno picked up six points in the triple jump, finishing sixth with a mark of 11.46 meters. It is his first top-10 finish in the event since finishing eighth at the 2022 LSC Outdoor Championships.
Boyd scored two points in the 200-meter run, finishing seventh with a time of 21.76 seconds. Boyd finished the weekend scoring 12 total points.
Abigail Jones and
Jazmene Duran picked up points for the Lady Chaps in the shot put. Jones finished seventh scoring two points with a toss of 12.16 meters. It is her highest finish of the season. Duran picked up one point with an eighth place finish with a personal best toss of 11.95 meters.
Nathaniel Luna scored one point with an eighth place finish in the 60-meter run with a time of 8.93 seconds. It is Luna's second straight top-10 finish in the event.
In the shot put, Garret Dixon picked up a new personal best in the event with a toss of 11.92 meters.
West Texas A&M won both men's and women's teams championships.
The Chaps will now prepare for the NCAA Indoor National Championships. Selections will be announced soon, with the championship event in Norfolk, Va. on Friday, Mar. 10.
