ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - George Garcia runs a top-10 national time as four Chaps broke school records on day one of the NM College Classic.
George Garcia broke his own school record in the 400-meter run by a full 0.56 seconds, finishing fourth out of 46 competitors with a time of 47.81 seconds. That time is the ninth-fastest in all of Division-II as of press time. Garcia was the top D-II finisher, and beat out runners from Miami, Kansas State, and Arkansas.
For the second straight week,
Abigail Jones broke her own record in the weight throw, finishing 25
th with a toss of 15.09 meters. Jones beat her school record last week in the same building at the UNM Team Open. She beat out throwers from UTEP, Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine, New Mexico State and CSUN in the event.
Competing in the pentathlon for the first time in her career,
Coulter Reel started the day strong, breaking her own school record in the 60-meter hurdles. Reel finished with a time of 9.94 seconds, demolishing her previous best of 10.06 seconds set at the MLK Invitational earlier this season inside the same arena. Reel has broken or set the school record mark three times this indoor season.
Reel continued to make history, becoming the first Lady Chap to compete in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor level. The freshman finished 20
th out of 23 total competitors, scoring 2823 total points. Reel's best finish was in the 800-meter run, where she finished twelfth. She also recorded a personal best in the shot put with a toss of 8.25 meters, along with a personal best in the long jump at 4.53 meters.
Lauren Guthrie broke her record in the pole vault by 0.09 meters, clearing 3.19 meters on her first try. Guthrie is still the only Lady Chap to record a mark in the pole vault in indoor track & field.
Bryce Spencer picked up his second straight top-10 finish in the weight throw, finishing seventh with a toss of 18.75 meters. Spencer finished above competitors from Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Rice, and was the highest Division-II finisher. His teammate
Garrett Dixon demolished his pervious career-best by 0.55 meters with a toss of 12.63 meters.
Cayden Butler picked up a top-15 finish in the high jump with a clearance of 2.02 meters. Butler tied jumpers from USC and Kansas State. He was also the second-highest finisher from a Division-II school.
Dustin Bryant set a new personal best in the long jump with a distance of 6.57 meters. That mark beats out his old personal best set last week at the UNM Team Open by 0.07 meters. Bryant beat out jumpers from Colorado, Arkansas, and North Texas on the way to a 34
th place finish. His teammate
Turner Edwards also set a new personal best with a jump of 5.45 meters, beating out his old mark of 5.13 meters set at the MLK Invitational.
Thomas McCully is participating in the men's heptathlon. Overall scores were unknown at press time. In the 60-meter run, McCully finished seventh with a time of 7.31 seconds, just 0.02 seconds from his personal best. He finished tenth in the long jump with a personal best distance of 5.75 meters, and finished seventh in the shot put with a toss of 11.49 meters, demolishing his old personal best mark by almost two meters. McCully ended the day finishing sixth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.69 meters.
Kamille Boyd ran right past her personal best in the 200-meter run, beating her old career-best mark by 0.39 seconds with a time of 26.17 seconds.
Landon Bowers set a new personal best in the 400-meter run, finishing with a time of 51.73 seconds. His teammate
Jorge Ronquillo also beat his personal best in the event, beating his old mark by 0.55 seconds with a time of 53.14 seconds.
Jozlyn Arana set a new personal best in the 400-meter run, finishing with a time of 1:00.13. Her teammate
Michaelle Sime ran the race for the first time this season, recording a time of 1:02.48.
Reagan Hale competed in the long jump for the first time this season, finishing with a mark of 4.69 meters.
The Chaps close out competition at the NM College Classic on Saturday, Feb. 4. Action begins from the ABQ Convention Center at 10:30 AM central time.
