LUBBOCK, Texas - The LCU track & field squads close out their final full team meet of the regular season, heading across town to the Jarvis Scott Open at Texas Tech this weekend.
Once again, the field is stacked with foes from the Lone Star state and the country, including host no. 3/15 Texas Tech, no. 3/7 West Texas A&M, no. 21 BYU, TCU, Sam Houston State, and Tarleton State, along with conference rivals Angelo State and Eastern New Mexico.
Last weekend in Albuquerque was another record-breaking stretch for the Chaps, as four school records were shattered at the NM College Classic.
Kevin Washington demolished his old school record in the triple jump by 0.12 meters, finishing 13
th with a distance of 14.91 meters. That mark is tied for the 16
th best jump in all of Division-II. Washington has reset his own school record twice this season.
George Garcia broke his own school record in the 400-meter run by a full 0.56 seconds, finishing fourth out of 46 competitors with a time of 47.81 seconds. That time is the ninth-fastest in all of Division-II. Garcia was the top D-II finisher, and beat out runners from Miami, Kansas State, and Arkansas. Garcia first broke the record in his first-ever race as a Chap in the Sports Performance Center, winning the event.
Joy Egwu broke her own record in the 60-meter run for the fourth time this season, beating her own record by 0.01 seconds with a time of 7.73 seconds. Egwu has reset the school record three times inside the ABQ Convention Center. Egwu first broke the school record inside of the Sports Performance Center earlier this season at the Corky Classic.
Competing in the pentathlon for the first time in her career,
Coulter Reel started the day strong, breaking her own school record in the 60-meter hurdles. Reel finished with a time of 9.94 seconds, demolishing her previous best of 10.06 seconds set at the MLK Invitational earlier this season inside the same arena. Reel has broken or set the school record mark three times this indoor season. Reel continued to make history, becoming the first Lady Chap to compete in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor level. The freshman finished 20
th out of 23 total competitors, scoring 2823 total points. Reel's best finish was in the 800-meter run, where she finished twelfth. She also recorded a personal best in the shot put with a toss of 8.25 meters, along with a personal best in the long jump at 4.53 meters.
Lauren Guthrie broke her record in the pole vault by 0.09 meters, clearing 3.19 meters on her first try. Guthrie is still the only Lady Chap to record a mark in the pole vault in indoor track & field.
Bryce Spencer picked up his second straight top-10 finish in the weight throw, finishing seventh with a toss of 18.75 meters. Spencer finished above competitors from Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Rice, and was the highest Division-II finisher. Spencer's toss of 18.96 meters at the UNM Team Open is the 17th best mark in Division-II this season.
In the heptathlon,
Thomas McCully finished eighth with 3,930 total points, becoming the first men's runner to compete in the event at the NCAA Division-II level. McCully finished ninth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.36 seconds, and then finished tied for seventh in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.40 meters. He closed out the heptathlon with a seventh place finish in the 1000 meter run with a time of 3:08.97.In the 60-meter run, McCully finished seventh with a time of 7.31 seconds, just 0.02 seconds from his personal best. He finished tenth in the long jump with a personal best distance of 5.75 meters, and finished seventh in the shot put with a toss of 11.49 meters, demolishing his old personal best mark by almost two meters. McCully ended the day finishing sixth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.69 meters.
