CANYON, Texas - The Chaps won four event championships and set six new school records at the WT Spring Break Classic on Saturday, Mar. 18.
Bryce Spencer led the way for the Chaps, winning two championships in both the hammer throw and discus. Spencer won the discus by 2.11 meters with a toss of 51.13 meters on his final throw of the day. That mark is an NCAA provisional mark, and is the fifth-best mark in all of Division-II. In the hammer throw, Spencer won the event by 2.35 meters with a throw of 56.69 meters. That mark is the fourth-best mark in Division-II, and is 0.08 meters away from being an NCAA provisional mark. Spencer also finished third in the javelin with a toss of 51.28 meters.
George Garcia picked up right where he left off from the indoor season, winning the 200-meter event title with a time of 21.35 seconds. That time is the third-fastest in Division-II, and is just 0.10 seconds from an NCAA provisional time. Garcia beat out 15 other runners, and won his heat by 0.20 seconds.
In the 400-meter run, Garcia demolished the school record in the event, recording a time of 46.66 seconds and a second-place finish. That time is an NCAA provisional mark, and the second-fastest in Division-II. The time also breaks the school record set in 1967 by Hubert Jones of 47.30 seconds. It is now the second school record Garcia holds individually, as he holds the indoor record in the 400-meter run.
Madelyn Merrell won her first career event championship in the 1500-meter run, winning with a time of 4:57.95. Merrell was the only runner to finish the race in under five minutes, beating out a pair of runners from New Mexico State in the event. The junior also finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.31.
The Chaps broke five other school records at the WT Spring Break Classic. The men's 4x100 meter relay team of
Nathaniel Luna,
Trael Robertson,
Keitron Boyd, and
Ryan Gordon won their heat and finished third overall with a time of 40.72 seconds. That time is the third-fastest time in Division-II, and an NCAA provisional mark. The time also breaks the school record set by D. Johnson, Ken Gray, Ike Lewis and Terry Hester all the way back in 1970 of 41.00 seconds.
In the shot put,
Abigail Jones broke her own record in the event with a toss of 12.37 meters, finishing fifth. That beats her old record-breaking mark of 11.89 meters set last year. Jones had three total throws over twelve meters in the event.
Skyler Dempsey set a new school record in the javelin on her first throw of the day. Dempsey finished third with a toss of 33.17 meters, beating the old record by 0.19 meters. She also finished seventh in the discus with a toss of 37.74 meters, and set a personal best in the hammer throw with a toss of 36.64 meters.
The women's long jump record fell by 0.01 meter, as
Candice Mackie broke the old school record of 5.40 meters with a jump of 5.41 meters to finish sixth in the event and third in her heat. It is Mackie's first career top-10 finish in the event.
Joy Egwu set a new school record in the 100-meter run, beating the old mark set last year by
Charlotte Scannell by 0.08 seconds, finishing fifth with a time of 12.35 seconds. Egwu won her heat by a full 0.28 seconds.
Coulter Reel once again made history for the Lady Chaps, becoming the first women's track & field athlete in LCU history to compete in the 100-meter hurdles and the high jump. In the high jump, Reel finished sixth with a clearance of 1.48 meters. In the 100-meter hurdles, Reel finished second in her heat and tenth overall with a time of 16.96 seconds, beating out a runner from West Texas A&M. Reel also set a personal best in the long jump with a distance of 4.81 meters.
Lauren Guthrie continued to have an historic season for the Lady Chaps, recording the first ever mark in Division-II outdoor track for LCU women's track & field in the pole vault. Guthrie finished second with a clearance of 3.05 meters, beating out competitors from West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico.
Kevin Washington had a good start to the outdoor season, finishing second in the long jump with a distance of 7.08 meters. That mark is the ninth-best in all of Division-II. In the triple jump, Washington finished third with a distance of 13.94 meters. That mark is the 20th best mark in Division-II.
Paityn Green set a new personal best in the javelin, finishing fourth with a toss of 31.01 meters. Green also set a personal best in the discus with a toss of 34.54 meters.
Jayda Rosales set a new personal best in the triple jump, finishing fifth with a distance of 10.82 meters. It is her first top-five finish in the event since winning the event championship at The Open last season.
Jazmene Duran finished ninth in the shot put with a toss of 11.52 meters. It is her second straight finish overall in the shot put after finishing eighth at the LSC Indoor Championships.
Thomas McCully finished ninth in the shot put with a toss of 10.75 meters. McCully competed in the discus and javelin for the first time in his career. He finished fifth in the javelin with a toss of 43.74 meters, while recording a toss of 33.50 meters in the discus. His teammate
Garrett Dixon also competed in the events for the first time, finishing sixth in the discus with a toss of 44.63 meters, and finishing seventh in the javelin with a throw of 40.75 meters.
Turner Edwards competed in the javelin for the first time in his career, finishing ninth with a toss of 33.62 meters.
Dustin Bryant finished tenth in the long jump with a distance of 6.38 meters. He also set a personal best in the triple jump, finishing fifth with a distance of 13.15 meters.
Haley George recorded a top-10 finish in the triple jump, finishing sixth with a distance of 9.90 meters.
The women's 4x100 meter relay team of Michelle Sime,
Kiley Cummings,
Kamille Boyd, and Egwu finished third with a time of 49.03 seconds. The quartet beat out two teams from New Mexico State.
Sheyla Vilca finished fourth in the 800-meter run, recording a time of 2:23.82. On the men's side,
Luke Mosley set a personal best in the 800-meter run, finishing fifth with a time of 1:59.05. His teammate
Riley Webb finished behind him at sixth with a time of 2:01.79.
Dalton Yeoman finished ninth in the event, his first time running the 800-meter run, with a time of 2:07.22.
Landon Bowers ran the 110-meter hurdles for the first time in his career, finishing fifth with a time of 15.33 seconds. Bowers also ran the 400-meter hurdles for the first time, finishing fourth with a time of 1:00.37.
Anna Salisbury finished second in the 400-meter run with a time of 56.34 seconds. She also finished eighth in the 200-meter with a time of 25.30 seconds.Her teammate
Jozlyn Arana finished sixth in the 400-meter run with a time of 58.05 seconds. Arana also set a personal best in the 200-meter run with a time of 25.85 seconds. Cummings also picked up a top-10 finish in the 400-meter, finishing tenth with a time of 1:00.60, while also setting a personal best in the 200-meter run with a time of 26.46 seconds.
Sime finished sixth in the 100-meter run with a time of 12.49 seconds. She set a personal best in the 200-meter run, finishing with a time of 26.15 seconds. Her teammate Boyd finished beind her in the 100-meter run with a time of 12.55 seconds. Scannell set a personal best in the 100-meter run with a time of 12.92 seconds.
Luna picked up a ninth place finish in his first time running the 100-meter, recording a time of 10.92 seconds. He also finished ninth in the 200-meter with a time of 22.17 seconds. His teammate Robertson recorded a personal best in the 200-meter run, finishing fifth with a time of 21.56 seconds.
Jorge Ronquillo picked up a top-five finish in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing third with a time of 1:00.09.
In the 200-meter run, Gordon won his heat and finished sixth overall in the event with a time of 21.72 seconds.
All three runners for the Lady Chaps in the 5000-meter run finished inside the top-10.
Chloe Trull paced the marathon with a time of 19:25.37 and a sixth place finish.
Hailey Lowery finished behind her in seventh with a personal best time of 19:42.21.
Sydnei Orozco finished eighth with a time of 21:37.40. On the men's side,
Aiden Zingone set a personal best in the 5000-meter, recording a time of 16:57.62.
The Chaps will compete across town at their next meet, heading to Texas Tech for the Masked Rider Open. Action begins on Friday, Mar. 24 at 1:00 PM.
