Chaps complete big day at Masked Rider Open

Bryce Spencer won hammer throw championship with a school record toss

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Chaparrals set five school records and four NCAA provisional marks at the Masked Rider Open on Saturday, Mar. 25. 

Bryce Spencer set a new school record and an NCAA provisional mark in the hammer throw, winning the event championship on Saturday, Mar. 25. The senior won the event championship with a toss of 61.38 meters on his second attempt. That throw beats his old school record in the event of 59.47 meters set at the 2022 Jo Meaker Classic by almost two meters. Spencer beat out throwers from Texas Tech, Oral Roberts, UT Tyler, West Texas A&M and Angelo State. That mark is the fourth best in all of Division-II, and is an NCAA provisional mark. 

Abigail Jones set a new school record for the third time this weekend, recording a toss of 44.00 meters and a sixth place finish in the hammer throw. That throw beats her old school record of 43.82 meters set at the LSC Outdoor Championships in 2022. Jones set school records last night in the discus and shot put.

For the second straight week, the quartet of Nathaniel Luna, Trael Robertson, Keitron Boyd and Ryan Gordon set a new school record in the 4x100 meter relay, finishing fifth with a time of 40.46 seconds. That mark obliterated their school record time of 40.72 seconds set last week at the WT Spring Break Open. When adjusted for altitude to 40.58 seconds, that time is the 10th fastest in all of Division-II, and an NCAA provisional mark. 

After setting the school record in the 100-meter run last week, Joy Egwu broke the record again with a time of 12.08 seconds. The time beats her old record by 0.27 seconds set last week at the WT Spring Break Classic. Michaelle Sime set a personal best in the event with a time of 12.55 seconds, while Kamille Boyd also set a new personal best with a time of 12.64 seconds. 

Coulter Reel broker her own school record in the 100-meter hurdles, recording a time of 16.88 seconds. Reel set the mark last week with a time of 16.96 seconds. Reel also finished tenth in the 400-meter hurdles, recording a time of 1:06.74.

Kevin Washington set an NCAA provisional mark in the long jump, finishing tied for third with a jump of 7.31 meters. That mark is the seventh-best jump in Division-II, and was 0.05 meters off from tying the school record in the event. Washington also finished fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 14.28 meters, the 21st best mark in all of Division-II. 

Anna Salisbury set an NCAA provisional mark of her own in the 400-meter run, finishing tenth with a time of 55.68 seconds. That time is the 12th fastest in all of Division-II. Her teammate Jozlyn Arana set a new personal best in the same event, finishing with a time of 56.66 seconds. 

For the second straight week, Madelyn Merrell recorded a top-10 finish in the 1500-meter run, finishing fourth with a time of 4:40.19. That time is the 24th fastest time in Division-II. Her teammate Julia Nelson ran the 1500-meter for the first time in her career, recording a time of 5:38.47. Sarah Blount also ran the race for the first time in her career, finishing with a time of 5:54.36. 

Dustin Bryant picked up a top-10 finish in the long jump and set a personal best with a jump of 6.68 meters. It's his third straight top-10 finish in the event. 

Robertson finished 10th in the 100-meter run with a time of 10.64 seconds, while his teammate Luna also set a personal best with a time of 10.66 seconds.

Sheyla Vilca picked up a top-10 finish with a tenth-place finish and a personal best time of 2:21.19 in the 800-meter run. Sydney Jones also set a personal best in the 800-meter, recording a time of 2:30.35. Kylie Knapp competed in the event for the first time in her LCU career, recording a time of 2:45.84. 

In the 200-meter run, Keitron Boyd finished ninth with a time of 21.55 seconds, while his teammate Georgia Garcia finished tenth with a personal best time in the race with a time of 21.57 seconds. Takunda Rutunga set a personal best in the race, recording a time of 23.90 seconds, while Turner Edwards also set a personal best with a time of 24.03 seconds. 

On the men's side, Luke Mosley set a personal best in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.91. His teammate Riley Webb also set a personal best, finishing the race with a time of 1:59.36. 

Thomas McCully finished fourth in the javelin, recording a toss of 49.76 meters on his fifth attempt, a new personal best. His teammate Garrett Dixon finished sixth with a personal best toss of 43.88 meters. Dixon also set a personal best in the hammer throw with a toss of 32.97 meters.

In men's pole vault, Jeremiah Fernandez tied his personal best with a clearance of 4.06 meters. On the women's side in the same event, Lauren Guthrie tied her school record with a clearance of 3.05 meters in the event. 

Hunter Gossett set a new personal best in the 400-meter run, finishing with a time of 52.04 seconds. Meanwhile, in the 400-meter hurdles, Landon Bowers set a personal best with a time of 56.01 seconds.

In his first race as a Chaparral, Kaleb Ganoa finished the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:14.56. Hagen Sage also set a personal best, recording a time of 4:15.01. Angel Avendano ran the 1500-meter for the first time in his LCU career, finishing with a time of 4:22.01, while Joshua Huang finished with a time of 4:24.39 in his first time competing in the event. 

The Chaps will now split up next weekend, with most of the team heading to San Marcos for the Texas State Bobcat Invitational. A select few athletes will compete at the 95th annual Texas Relays in Austin. For more information, fans can head to lcuchaps.com.
