LCU's Men's and Women's Track Programs Had Their Best LSC Championship Results in Program History

LUBBOCK, Texas (May 9, 2023) – The Lubbock Christian University track program enjoyed their best Lone Star Conference Championships in their short history in the LSC, as the women's program finished sixth and the men's program finished fourth at the 2023 edition hosted by Lubbock Christian University.

Four program records were broken and seven events resulted with LCU student-athletes taking the podium in the three-day event at LCU Soccer and Track Complex. Two of the records had quite a history before being broken and the two were in relay competitions. The men's 4x400 (mile relay) team of Chris Rader, Keitron Boyd, Ryan Gordon and George Garcia completed the event in a program record time of 3.09.40 (NCAA Division II provisional mark met) to finish second. The prior LCU record in the race was a time of 3:12.69, which was completed at the 1986 NAIA Championships in Russellville, Ark. by Armstrong Williams, Eli Turner, Kenrick Williams and Sherlon Didier.  The women's 4X100 relay team of Kamille Boyd, Joy Egwu, Jozlyn Arana and Michaelle Sime broke a 1987 program record with a fourth place finish of 46.99. The program's prior record was 47.24 by Anettie Gilbreath, Lori Hughes, Patricia Crockett and Debbie Breeze at an event hosted by UT Arlington (UTA).

Individual event records were set by Kevin Washington and Anna Salisbury, who each beat their own prior school records. Salisbury won the 400 meters, topping a provisional mark in prelims (54.17) with a 53.65 in the finals. Washington, who finished second in the triple jump with a 14.85-meter leap, finished second in the long jump with a jump of 7.41 meters. Joy Egwu appeared to break a program record in the 100 meters with a time of 11.98, but it was wind-aided.

The men's fourth-place team finish topped their prior mark of a seventh-place finish last season. Bryce Spencer set the tone of the Chaps success on the opening day with a first-place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 60.95 (met provisional mark). He followed Friday with a second-place finish in the discus with a throw of 55.36. LCU's Garrett Dixon also had personal bests in the events with a 46.60-meter throw in the discus and a 44.53 throw in the hammer.

Trael Robertson, who ran a personal best time of 21.27 in the 200 meters, hit a provisional mark in the 100 meters with a time of 10.47 to finish sixth (also hit it with a 10.49 in prelims). In the 400 meters, George Garcia (second, 46.57) and Chris Rader (seventh, 47.81) each accomplished provisional marks with their times. Nathaniel Luna met a provisional mark in the 200 meters with a personal-best time of 20.99.

A slew of additional personal-best times and distances were accomplished by Chaps at the meet.  Riley Webb ran a 1:59.29 in the 400-meter prelims for a personal best time. Hagen Sage (4:05.47 in the 1,500-meter prelims) and Jorge Ronquillo (400-meter hurdles time of 58.79) joined Webb with personal-best marks in running events. In field events, Dustin Bryant (13.38 meters in the triple jump to finish fourth) and Nathan Karseno (6.91-meter long jump to finish fifth) each had top-5 finishes while accomplishing personal-best distances. Jeremiah Fernandez (4.15 meters in pole vault) and Thomas McCully (11.89-meter toss in the shot put) rounded out the LCU competitors hitting personal-best marks in field competitions.

LCU's women's program's previous best finish at the event was an eighth-place finish last season. Additional success from the Lady Chaps included personal-best finishes in the 200-meters by Joy Egwu (24.68), Kamille Boyd (25.50) and Michaelle Sime (25.60). Sky Sena completed the 10,000-meter event in a time of 41:33.10 for a personal mark, and Coulter Reel obtained a personal-high of 4,039 points in the heptathlon. In field events, Paityn Green finished 10th in the dices with a personal-best throw of 40.95.

The LSC Championship does not lead into the national championships, as one more meet is still on the docket before May 25th championship start in Pueblo, Colo. The WT Last Chance is scheduled for May 14 in Canyon, Texas.
