Annual LSC Honor Recognizes Accomplishments in Athletics, Scholarship and Leadership

RICHARDSON, Texas (July 11, 2023) - The annual Lone Star Conference Scholar-Athlete Award winners were announced, with Lubbock Christian University volleyball's Sage Chain and men's basketball's Rowan Mackenzie LCU's award winners among the 33 student-athletes recognized by league officials.

Each academic year, the LSC presents a Scholar-Athlete Award to one male and one female student-athlete at member institutions. These student-athletes are selected as representatives of the outstanding accomplishments in athletics, scholarship and leadership that are displayed on each LSC campus during the year. To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have participated at least two years in their sport and be a member of the graduating class.

Chain, a senior from Schertz, Texas, was a LSC All-Conference and CSC Academic All-District honoree this season. The two-time All-Conference selection and middle blocker led LCU in points (287.5), points per set (2.99), blocks (99) and blocks per set (1.03). She ranked fifth in the LSC in block per set and seventh in total blocks. Chain completed her LCU career with 569 kills and 269 blocks (71 solo... 77 would have moved her into the top-10 in program history). The Animal Science major claimed her first Lone Star Conference All-Academic Team honor during the 2022 season as well.

Mackenzie is coming off a season that was capped by him being named a Non-Division I All-Texas Team selection by Dave Campbell's Texas Magazine. In the classroom, the Perth, Australia native was a CSC Academic All-America selection and was the Lone Star Conference Academic Player of the Year (also led to LSC All-Academic Team accolades). The guard finished with the second-highest single-season scoring mark in program history with 606 points, which led to NABC All-District and D2CCA First Team All-Region honors.
