George Garcia Closed Out the Pan American U20 Championships With 4x400 Relay Win For USA

MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico (August 7, 2023) – George Garcia closed the 2023 Pan American U20 Championships Sunday claiming a second gold medal of the championships, as he was the opening leg of Team USA's junior national team's 4x400 (1600 Meters) Relay Team which claimed gold at Jose A. Figueroa Freire Stadium.

Garcia claimed his second international medal (both are gold), as the Red, White and Blue ran a time of 3:05.98. The El, Paso native and All-America selection was teamed with Jacob Andrews (Southern Cal commitment), Jace McGavock (Mesa Community College commitment) and Grant Buckmiller (Lake Stevens H.S., Lake Sevens, Wash.) in the event. Garcia unofficially ran a 45.82 split in his leg of the race.

The first medal for Garcia was claimed Friday night, as he was part of American squad which broke an event record with a time of 3:18.07 in the Mixed 4x400 Relays. The rest of his relay squad included Madison Whyte (Southern Cal commitment), Max De Angelo (Millbrook H.S., Raleigh, N.C.) and JaMeesia Ford (Britt H.S., Fayetteville, N.C.). Garcia produced an unofficial 45.6-second split in his leg of the relay.

The international event closes out a memorable and long freshman campaign for Garcia. He opened the running season qualifying for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships. During the outdoor season, Garcia claimed USTFCCCA All-America status in the 400-Meters and in the 4x400 Relay due to his solid performances at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo. Garcia broke and currently holds LCU's program record in the 400-meters (45.76) and as a relay member of the 4x400 relay team (3:08.70).
