SAN ANGELO, Texas - The Lubbock Christian University Baseball team split a road double header with 11th ranked Angelo State Saturday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
GAME 1 | Lubbock Christian 10, No. 11 Angelo State 5
Junior Brevin McCool put together a stellar outing at the plate Saturday, hitting three homers to help power the LCU over the Rams 10-5.
Junior Ryan Markwardt (5-1) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for LCU (19-9, 18-8). The left-hander went five shutout innings while giving up two hits, allowing one walk and striking out four.
McCool went 3-for-4 at the plate, supplementing his three home runs with six RBIs. Senior Carson Ogilvie added to McCool's impressive power-hitting performance by going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Sophomore Jacob Gutierrez also helped out for the Chaps, going 2-for-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chaps got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Ogilvie put LCU on the board with a leadoff home run off junior Alezeah Gutierrez.
The Chaps lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the second trailing 4-1. LCU picked up a run on McCool's leadoff home run off of junior Alezeah Gutierrez, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Rams.
Angelo State expanded their lead to 5-2 before the Lubbock Christian offense got back in action, overtaking the Rams to grab a 6-5 advantage in the third. The Chaparrals bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of McCool.
LCU held the Rams without a run before building on their lead in the sixth inning. The Chaps scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Ogilvie and a two-run home run from McCool, bringing the score to 10-5 in favor of LCU. The score remained 10-5 for the rest of the game, as the Chaps coasted to the win.
GAME NOTES
- LCU grabbed the lead at 6-5 in the top half of the third and never lost that advantage.
- The Chaps out-hit the Rams at a 12-6 clip.
- LCU went 3-for-5 (.600) with runners in scoring position.
- LCU pitchers faced 31 Angelo State hitters in the game, allowing 10 ground balls and six fly balls while striking out four.
- McCool is the first Chap to hit three homers in a game this season.
- Angelo State was led offensively by senior Conagher Sands, who went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
- Freshman Jude Cook led the Rams pitching staff, throwing 1.2 shutout innings.

Sophomore Jacob Gutierrez collected three hits, but LCU wasn't able to carry their high powered offense into game two falling 10-3.
Senior Chris Shull (1-1) got the ball to start for LCU (19-10, 18-9) and took the loss. Senior Logan Ellis was a bright spot for the Chaps, coming out of the bullpen and throwing one shutout inning, allowing one hit, with no walks and one strikeout.
In addition to his three hits, Gutierrez had a double and an RBI to lead the Chaps. Senior Carson Ogilvie furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Senior Jarred Gibson also chipped in for Lubbock Christian, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chaps got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. LCU got on the board thanks to Gutierrez's RBI double with one out.
The Chaps lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the third trailing 6-1. LCU brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Gibson's single, which tightened the Rams lead to 6-3. The Chaps were unable to get any closer, as Angelo State added four runs to their tally on the way to a 10-3 final.

- Angelo State was led offensively by senior Tripp Clark, who went 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI.
