Been a Minute... Lady Chaps Back in San Antonio

After Meeting The Prior Five Times In Lubbock, LCU Heads to Alamo City For First Time Since 2021

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (March 8, 2024) – Lubbock Christian University travels to St. Mary's Friday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader, as the two teams open a three-game Lone Star Conference series at St. Mary's Softball Stadium.

 LCU and StMU Series Snapshot
  • With wins in eight of the prior 10 meetings, including the last four, LCU and StMU are even at 21-21 in the all-time series.
  • LCU is 7-16 all-time against StMU in San Antonio, winning two of their last three games there. The Lady Chaps won their prior game in San Antonio 3-2, which was back on Apr. 24, 2021 (previous five meetings and seven of the last nine have been in Lubbock).
  • Twelve (12) of the previous 20 meetings have been decided by a run and eight of the past 11 LCU wins in the head-to-head series have been one-run decisions.

Season Tidbits
  • The Lady Chaps are 10-9 on the season. They enter the StMU series following an 10-3 win Sunday to complete a three-game LSC series against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
  • LCU has had three games canceled due to weather this season.
  • Returning All-Region selection and three-time All-Conference selection Skylar Herrera leads LCU in home runs with five, which has her ranking second in the LSC with a pace of 0.33 home runs per game. She wrapped up the TAMUK series with a two-homer game Sunday. Herrera ranks ninth actively in career home runs with 38. She also ranks 11th in RBI with 157 and seventh in total bases (375).
  • Maxine Valdez has a 2-5 record in the circle with a 3.48 ERA. She has 46 strikeouts in 41.1 innings. Valdez ranks 65th nationally with 7.6 strikeouts per seven innings, which is sixth in the LSC. Her WHIP rate of 1.11 is 10th in the LSC. Valdez is 28th among active players in career strikeouts with 437.
  • LCU pitchers have a 2.79 strikeout-to-walk ratio, which is 39th nationally and is third in the LSC.
  • Teoni Lamb (4-2) ranks 84th in the nation in WHIP with a mark of 1.07 (fifth in the LSC). She did not allow a walk for the first 17.2 innings pitched to open the season and is on a pace of 1.6 walks allowed per seven innings (third in the LSC). Lamb ranks third in the LSC in shutouts (2, tied for 29th nationally), and 12th in hits allowed per seven innings (5.86).
  • The Lady Chaps rank 39th nationally in WHIP (1.24), which ranks third in the LSC. They also rank fifth in the LSC in ERA at 2.78 (62nd nationally).

Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 14th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Tuesday with a softball record of 536-183.
  • Along with surpassing 500 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record. Combine the two sports and Hays has coached in 1,235 total games at LCU.

They enter the series on a seven-game win streak after sweeping Texas A&M International in Laredo, Texas. They return home, where they are 5-1 on the season.
  • St. Mary's is hitting .287 this season (seventh in the LSC) and they have nine home runs on the season. They have a staff ERA of 3.86 and opponents are hitting .284 against them.
  • StMU was preseason picked to finish eighth in the LSC in the LSC Preseason Poll.
