LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lubbock Christian University baseball program clinched their first Lone Star Conference championship in program history Sunday, beating Eastern New Mexico 9-4 at Hays Field.
Senior Chris Shull started on the mound and picked up the win, allowing six runs, four of which were earned, and striking out five in four innings of work. Sophomore Coleson Abel also made an impact on the mound, dominating Greyhound hitters punching out eight in his 3.2 innings of action.
Junior Brevin McCool led the Chaparrals at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Senior Ryan Ball also put together a noteworthy performance going 2-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning, LCU claimed a 2-1 lead with RBIs off the bat of Nate Van Maanen and Hayden Blair.
The game was tied 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth before the Chaps took the lead for good as Jacob Gutierrez drove in Blair with an RBI single.
The Chaps added four more runs to their lead and slammed the door on the mound to secure the sweep and the LSC title.
GAME NOTES
- The Lubbock Christian pitching staff combined to strike out 15 Eastern New Mexico hitters.
- Four Chaps had multiple hits in the ballgame. McCool led the team with three base knocks. Ball, Carson Ogilvie, and Jarred Gibson all added two hits a piece.
- The Chaps out-hit the Greyhounds at a 13-9 clip.
- Lubbock Christian pitchers limited Eastern New Mexico to just 1-for-14 (.071) with runners in scoring position.
- Eastern New Mexico was led offensively by junior Luciano Terilli, who went 1-for-2.
- This is the first time LCU has won the Lone Star Conference title, but not their first since joining NCAA Division II. The Chaps won the Heartland Conference in 2017 and 2019 (finished first in the 2014 transition year).
