Postseason Play Begins Friday For Lady Chaps

LCU Needs Wins as They Enter LSC Championships No.9 in Region

CANYON, Texas (May 2, 2024) – Wins are important… No.6-seed Lubbock Christian University enters the Lone Star Conference Championships regionally ranked No.9 and they need wins for a third consecutive trip to the NCAA South Central Regional. LCU's mission begins Friday at Schaeffer Park, as they face No.3-seed No.21 Angelo State at 11 a.m. in the quarterfinals of the LSC Championship.

The Scenario
  • If LCU defeats Angelo State, LCU will play again Friday in a Semifinals contest at 4 p.m. against No.2-seed UT Tyler. If LCU is able to go 2-0 on Friday, they will advance to Saturday's 2 p.m. Championship Game.
  • Any loss would eliminate LCU from the tournament and place their NCAA Division II South Central Regional sights towards an at-large bid during Monday's NCAA Selection Show (9 a.m.).
 
LCU and ASU Series Snapshot
  • Angelo State is 12-6 all-time against LCU, but the Lady Chaps have won five of the prior eight meetings.
  • The Rambelles have a 2-1 series lead this season, as the regular season series was held in Lubbock Apr. 13-14.
    • Baylea Myers (5-for-10, .500) and Ally Oyanguren (5-for-11, .455) each had five hits in the regular season series.  
    • LCU hit five home runs, as Oyanguren and Kamryn Gibbs each hit two. Gibbs led LCU with four RBI in the series.
    • LCU hit .307 against the Rambelles, while ASU bats produced a .291 average.
    • LCU pitcher Teoni Lamb went 1-0 in the series with a complete-game four-hit shutout.  
    • Layni Tanner led the Rambelle bats in Lubbock, going 6-for-10 (.600). Amelia Hatthorn (2.10 ERA) is 1-0 in the circle against LCU with a win and a save, as she appeared in each of the victories against LCU.
  • The Lady Chaps are 2-1 all-time against ASU in neutral site settings, including a 1-0 record in Canyon. LCU defeated ASU 5-1 in Canyon on Feb. 13, 2016.
  • The Lady Chaps and Angelo State have met two prior times in the postseason, but each were in NCAA South Central Regionals, which were split 1-1. LSC defeated ASU 6-5 in 13 innings on May 12, 2022 in Tyler, Texas.
  • Angelo State is currently nationally ranked (No.21) has been nationally ranked in 13 of the prior 17 meetings between the two teams.
  • Tiarra Delrosario is 18-for-37 (.486) in her career against ASU (nine games). She has a .531 on-base percentage.
  • Hope Banales (8-for-24) is hitting .333 all-time against ASU. Banales has a home run and six RBI against ASU in six games.
  • Kamryn Gibbs' is hitting 333 (10-for-30) in 10 career games against ASU. She has two home runs and seven RBI.
  • Skylar Herrera has 12 hits in 11 career games against the Belles. She has a .286 average with two home runs and seven RBI.
  • Maxine Valdez has a 2-0 career mark in six career appearances against ASU and holds 45 strikeouts in 34.1 innings. ASU is hitting .242 against her in her career.

Season Tidbits
  • The Lady Chaps are 25-21 on the season. They enter the LSC series on a three-game losing streak, as they were swept by No.4 UT Tyler in the final week of the regular season last weekend in Tyler, Texas.
  • LCU has had three games canceled due to weather this season.
  • All-LSC Selections:
  • Returning All-Region selection and four-time All-Conference selection Skylar Herrera leads LCU in home runs with 11, which has her ranking third in the LSC with a pace of 0.26 home runs per game (63rd nationally). Her 11 home runs ranks tied for sixth in the LSC. Herrera ranks 17th actively in career home runs (in NCAA Division II) with 44 (third all-time in program history… needs 48 to move into second). She also ranks 15th in RBI with 175 and seventh in total bases (428). 
  • Maxine Valdez has a 11-7 record in the circle with a 2.14 ERA. She has 120 strikeouts in 118.0 innings. Valdez ranks fifth in the LSC with 7.1 strikeouts per seven innings. Her WHIP rate of 1.08 is third in the LSC. Valdez is 32nd among active players in career strikeouts with 512 and is one of three LCU pitchers all-time to surpass 500 career strikeouts.
  • LCU pitchers have a 2.53 strikeout-to-walk ratio, which is 51st nationally and is second in the LSC.
  • Teoni Lamb (9-5) did not allow a walk for the first 17.2 innings pitched to open the season and ranks tied for second in the LSC in shutouts (5, tied for 37th nationally). Valdez is fifth in the LSC with four shutouts.
  • The Lady Chaps rank 50th nationally in WHIP (1.25), which ranks fifth in the LSC. They rank fifth in the LSC in ERA at 2.83 (59th nationally).
  • LCU is hitting .305 as a team (fourth in LSC), with Tiarra Delrosario leading the team with 57 hits (ninth in LSC). Delrosario leads the team hitting .380 (eighth in LSC).
  • The Lady Chaps have produced 41 home runs (fourth in LSC and 50th in nation) and they have been hit by nine different Lady Chaps.
  • Delrosario (.446) and Kamryn Gibbs (.404) each have an on-base percentage over .400.

Lone Star Conference Championships Breakdown
  • This season is LCU's fourth tournament appearance in the LSC Championships (of four eligible seasons, as there was no tournament in 2020).
  • Prior to the LSC, LCU qualified for four Heartland Conference Championships, winning the tournament twice (2016, 2017) and compiling a 10-5 tournament record all-time.
  • LCU is 0-3 all-time in the LSC Championships.
  • LCU is hitting .255 all-time in LSC Championship play and they have a staff ERA of 6.33.
  • Angela Donaldson is LCU's all-time hit leader in the tournament with six hits.

    • The Lady Chaps went 24-18 in LSC play this season, which had them with a sixth-place finish in the LSC .

    • Tiarra Delrosario led LCU with a .381 average in LSC play. She had a team leading 53 hits (Hope Banales was second with 48), along with 10 doubles and 20 RBI.
    • The Lady Chaps had 40 home runs in LSC play from eight different individuals. Skylar Herrera has all 11 of her home runs in conference.

Streaking Along
  • Baylea Myers and Kamryn Gibbs co-lead LCU, actively, with a three-game hit streak (each). Tiarra Delrosario had a 26-game hit streak earlier in the season, which is the longest by a Lady Chap this season and the most since McKenzie Clemmons had a 32-game hit streak in 2012.
  • Gibbs and Hanna Wells have eached reached base safely in four consecutive games, which actively leads LCU. Delrosario (27) and Ally Oyanguren (26) have the season-lead for LCU in the category.
  • Delrosario leads LCU with 17 multi-hit games. Ally Oyanguren leads LCU with eight multi-RBI games.
 
Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 14th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Friday with a softball record of 552-195.
  • Along with surpassing 500 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record. Combine the two sports and Hays has coached in 1,262 total games at LCU.
 
National Notes
  • Lubbock Christian went 0-9 last season against nationally ranked programs (went 9-10 in 2022).
  • This season, LCU is 3-9 against nationally ranked programs. Included in the mix is a road win over No.1 West Texas A&M on Apr. 5.
  • LCU opened the season receiving votes in the NFCA National Top-25 Coaches Preseason Poll.
  • The Lady Chaps made their debut at No.8 in the NCAA Division II South Central Region rankings and are currently No.9.
 
Looking at ASU
  • The Rambelles produced a 29-25 record last season, finishing eighth in the LSC with a 21-21 conference mark. They are 37-15 this season and went 28-14 in conference (third in the LSC). ASU is coming off a road series at West Texas A&M in which they lost two of three games.
  • ASU is hitting .288 this season (sixth in the LSC) and they have 33 home runs on the season (seventh in LSC). They have a staff ERA of 2.33 (third in LSC, 37th nationally) and opponents are hitting .244 against them.
  • Angelo State was preseason picked to finish seventh in the LSC in the LSC Preseason Poll.
  • The Rambelles lead the LSC and are second nationally in triples with 24. Tatiana Trotter leads the LSC and is second nationally with nine triples this season. Head-to-head this season, LCU's Bailey Hughes has the only triple in the series.
  • Cheyenne Floyd co-leads the LSC in wins with 20 and is 20-7 with a 1.75 ERA. She has appeared in 32 of the team's 52 games this season and has 148 strikeouts (57th nationally) in 144 innings.
