GOODYEAR, Ariz. (September 16, 2024) -- The Lubbock Christian University women's golf team turned in a strong performance during the opening round of the RJGA Shootout at the Golf Club of Estrella on September 16, 2024. The Lady Chaps ended the first day in a solid tie for first place among the 16-team field, showcasing their potential with an eye on improving their standing in tomorrow's final round.
Anaya Perales, a standout sophomore, delivered a remarkable performance, carding a 1-over-par 73. Her round was highlighted by exceptional play on the par 5 holes, where she averaged a stellar 4.50, the lowest among all competitors in the tournament thus far. Perales made the most of these scoring opportunities with birdies on the 7th, 9th and 16th holes. Perales' strong performance was complimented by transfer
Alejandra Escobar and junior
Alexandra Escamilla. Escobar ended the day 5-over-par and tied for 23
rd place in her first action with the Lady Chaps. In addition, Escamilla finished 6-over-par which led to a tie in 29
th place.
Senior
Lily Griffin ended her day 8-over-par and tied for 41
st place, while fellow senior
Kyra Schmuhl finished 15-over-par and in sole possession of 77
th place. Team-wise, Lubbock Christian posted a first-round score of 308, tied for the lead. The Lady Chaps will aim to close the gap in the final round and secure a victory in their first tournament. The RJGA Shootout continues on September 17, with teams returning to the Golf Club of Estrella for the concluding round. Lubbock Christian University will look to build on their strong start and climb up the leaderboard as they vie for a top finish.
