Seeking a Turnaround, LCU Eyes First Road Win as Midwestern State Struggles to Break Conference Curse

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (September 28, 2024) – Lubbock Christian University looks to rebound from its Lone Star Conference opener loss on Saturday at D.L. Coliseum, as they take on Midwestern State, which also dropped its LSC opener on Friday. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. and will conclude the first week of LSC action.

LOOKING AT MSU
- LCU and Wichita Falls, Texas based Midwestern State are scheduled for their 50th all-time meeting, as LCU holds a 32-17 all-time series lead. The Lady Chaps have won 16 of the last 19 meetings, including a 3-2 win in their last visit to Wichita Falls (Oct. 4, 2023), which was also the most previous meeting. LCU is 13-8 all-time in Wichita Falls (against MSU). The Lady Chaps have won the prior four meetings.

- Midwestern State has a 6-6 mark on the young season and opened LSC play Friday with a 3-0 loss to Angelo State. The loss ended MSU's three-match win streak following a trio of wins in the LSC Crossover (wins over Eastern New Mexico, Western New Mexico and Sul Ross in Portales, N.M.). MSU is 3-2 at home on the season.

- The Mustangs head into LSC play this season with the baggage of 10 consecutive conference losses from last season (11 straight conference losses, if Friday is included). They went 4-24 last season (they have already surpassed last season's wins total) and 1-15 in LSC play (last in the conference). They enter this season No.16 in the LSC Preseason Poll.

- Midwestern State ranks fourth in the conference for digs per set, averaging 16.9 digs which places them 43rd nationally. Jenna Redding leads MSU and is 11th in the LSC in digs per set with 3.83 per set.

- Midwestern State features several standout players. Notably, Riley Rabedeaux ranks 16th in the conference with 3.05 kills per set, while Demi Stauffenberg is 17th with 3.0 kills per set. Stauffenberg is fifth in total attacks (407). Gabrielle Oos leads the defensive side for the ponies, as she is fifth in the LSC with 1.0 blocks per set (ranks seventh in total blocks with 37).

LADY CHAP NOTES
- The Lady Chaps are seeking to end a their first five-match losing streak since the 2020 season (played Spring 2021 due to CoVID), as they also seek their first true road win (0-4) of the season. LCU, who opened the season 3-1, has dropped six of their last seven matches. The latest was a 3-1 loss Friday at Texas Woman's despite Kiana Fallaha and Lily Bickley each recording 18-kill performances.

- LCU stands out in the attacks per set category, entering Saturday averaging 38.3 attacks, which ranks third in the Lone Star Conference and 26th nationally. Kiana Fallaha and Lily Bickley are at the forefront, contributing significantly to this statistic. Fallaha ranks second in the conference with 11.8 attacks per set (12th nationally) and has 520 total attacks to rank 20th nationally (second in the conference). Overall, LCU's total attacks amount to 1,687, which ranks third in the conference and 56th nationally.
 
-Key items from Friday: Lubbock Christian had three players in double figures in digs, led by 20 from Leddy Rae Guinn, who notched her fourth performance of at least 20 digs this season… Kiana Fallaha registered a double-double with 18 kills and 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season and 17th of her career… Lily Bickley tied Fallaha with a match-high 18 kills for Lubbock Christian. Bickley's total was one shy of matching her career-high mark.

- This season marks LCU's fourth season under coach Giboney. The Lady Chaps seventh head coach in program history has jumped into his 20th year of NCAA coaching. Giboney, who has four NCAA Tournament appearances and seven conference titles on his resume, surpassed 400 coaching victories in his first season with LCU and has a career coaching mark of 436-211. The Chaps head coach entered the season as the 29th best-active head coach in win percentage (.679) and as the 27th best-active head coach in victories (432). He has the third-highest win total of head coaches with less than 20 years of head coaching experience.

- Setter Kayton Genenbacher currently sits ninth all-time in LCU's career record books for assists with 2,528. Friday, she became the ninth Lady Chaps member in program history to reach 2,500 assists. Genenbacher ranks 38th nationally in assists per set with an average of 10.2, which places her fourth in the Lone Star Conference. She has amassed a total of 450 assists this season (fourth in LSC and 35th nationally).  
 
- Lubbock Christian University (LCU) has averaged 12.9 kills per set while allowing 14.9 kills per set in true road matches this season. Bryleigh Schweer leads the team with a hitting percentage of .413, averaging 1.88 kills per set, while Lily Bickley follows closely behind, posting a hitting percentage of .371 and contributing 3.00 kills per set. Bickley (7) and Leddy Rae Guinn (6) have combined for 13 of LCU's 19 aces in road matches. Additionally, Kayton Genenbacher leads LCU in assists, averaging 10.19 assists per set, and Guinn tops the team in digs with 3.31 digs per set.
 
-The Lady Chaps have shown potential in several key statistical categories within the Lone Star Conference and at the national level. Notably, the team's digs per set average of 15.9 ranks eighth in the conference and 83rd nationally, highlighting a solid defensive effort, led by Leddy Rae Guinn (11th in LSC with 3.5 digs per set). On the offensive side, the team's kills per set average of 13.2 is respectable, placing eighth in the conference, with Kiana Fallaha (fourth in points per set and 81st  nationally, 4.08) and Lily Bickley (10th in LSC, 3.52) leading the way in scoring.
