CENTENNIAL STATE START
Friday, Lubbock Christian stayed unbeaten with a 63–53 win over Colorado Christian, riding a dominant second half and a standout performance from
Kennedy Chappell, who posted 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. LCU erased a nine-point deficit, tied the game at halftime, and pulled away with a 17–12 third quarter. Freshmen
Meg Meekins and
Raegan Lee added eight points each, and
Martie McCoy set a career high with eight assists. CCU, playing its season opener, shot well early but committed 19 turnovers and faded after the break as the Lady Chaps improved to 3–0
CHAP-TIVATING STATS: 5 LADY CHAP FACTS
1 > Chappell Produces One of the Rarest Lines in Program History:
Kennedy Chappell's 20-7-6-3 performance against Colorado Christian qualifies as one of the most statistically complete games in LCU's NCAA era. She became only the second Lady Chap since 2013 to hit 20+ points, 7+ rebounds, 6+ assists, and 3+ steals, a feat previously accomplished only by Nicole Hampton, who logged the line four times during the 2015–16 national title season. Chappell also remains the only active LCU player with three straight games of 10+ points and 5+ assists, a streak matched in the past decade by only three players.
2 > LCU Has Two of the LSC's Most Efficient Facilitators
Chappell (6.3 APG) and
Martie McCoy (4.7 APG) currently sit No. 3 and No. 4 in the Lone Star Conference in assists per game — making LCU the only team with two players in the top five. McCoy's eight-assist game vs. CCU more than doubled her previous career best of four. Both players rank inside the top-6 (in the LSC) in assist-to-turnover ratio, and LCU as a team has produced an LSC-best +19 turnover margin through three games, heavily driven by their combined 48 assists.
3 > Meekins Emerging as One of League's Top Freshmen Scorers:
Freshman guard
Meg Meekins, averaging 14.3 points, currently ranks No. 13 in the LSC in scoring. She has reached at least eight points in every game and has eight three-pointers through her first three collegiate contests. Meekins and Chappell have combined for 54.2% of LCU's total offense.
4 > LCU's Second-Half Dominance Is Becoming Its Identity:
The Lady Chaps carry a +32 margin in second-half scoring over their first three games — an average advantage of +10.7 per game. Third quarters have been especially decisive: LCU has posted a combined +21 margin in third quarters, outscoring opponents by an average of +7 per third quarter.
5 > Repeated Comeback Wins Highlight Early Resilience:
LCU has trailed by nine points or more in all three games and won each by double digits (average final margin: +12.0). The Lady Chaps wiped out a 13-point deficit in the season opener, then recovered from consecutive 9-point holes.
FIVE FACTS ABOUT CSUP
1 > CSU Pueblo (1-3) enters Sunday looking to stabilize offensively after consecutive sub-50-point outings, averaging 59.3 points while shooting 36.7% from the field and 26.0% from three across four games. The Pack have struggled sustaining scoring runs and have been prone to droughts, an issue highlighted in the loss to UT Tyler where they shot 35% overall and just 4-of-18 from deep. Their perimeter-led roster must rediscover early-season rhythm to keep pace with a disciplined LCU defense that has excelled in second halves.
2 > The ThunderWolves' identity begins with their senior backcourt of Seneya Martinez and Genesis Sweetwine, who share the team scoring lead at 13.3 points per game. Martinez has been efficient inside the arc (.489 FG) and continues to generate steady production at all three levels, while Sweetwine provides the Pack's most reliable perimeter threat (7–17 3FG, .412). The pair was held to just seven combined points against UT Tyler, and CSU Pueblo's ability to compete Sunday hinges on whether their All-Tournament tandem can rebound.
3 > Freshman forward Jada Bobb has emerged as a major bright spot, giving the Pack needed interior scoring and physicality. She is averaging 7.5 points while shooting an efficient .483 from the floor and is coming off a season-best 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Her ability to finish around the basket and compete on the glass (2.8 rpg) adds balance to an offense heavily dependent on guard play.
4 > CSU Pueblo's frontcourt rotation—anchored by junior Dasani Nesbit and supported by Laci Roffle and Anyla Owens—will be tested on the glass after being outrebounded by an average of 13.8 boards per game. Opponents are pulling down 45.3 rebounds per contest, and UT Tyler's +13 margin exposed a recurring challenge. Nesbit (6.8 ppg, 5.0 rpg) continues to provide consistent interior work and rim protection.
5 > Defensively, the ThunderWolves have been disruptive despite roster turnover, forcing 43 steals and generating 55 opponent turnovers through four games. Their pressure kept them competitive even in losses, and the Pack's bench—highlighted by Ruby Sweeney-Spitzeck's nine points on Friday—continues to provide scoring and defensive energy.
THE SERIES AGAINST CSUP
LCU leads the all-time series at 10-5 against CSUP (formerly known as Southern Colorado). The home team won the first five meetings, with LCU bucking that trend with a 2015-16 season-opening win in Pueblo. The two teams have met annually for the prior four seasons, with LCU posting a 4-1 record in the span (LCU has won four straight). The first two all-time meetings came down to the final buzzer. On Dec. 9, 1989 in Lubbock, Burgandy Bass hit the game winning shot at the horn for a 58-56 LCU win. Nearly a year later, on Dec. 8, 1989 in Pueblo, LCU rallied back from a 63-55 deficit with 24 points from Sherry Blackwell, but a three-pointer at the buzzer didn't fall and LCU lost 73-72. Eight of the prior 12 meetings have been in Colorado (four in Pueblo) and under
Steve Gomez's watch. LCU last played CSUP in Pueblo on Nov. 8, 2019 (77-60 LCU win) and they are 2-2 in Pueblo against The Pack.
PRIOR MEETING AGAINST CSUP
Tyler, Texas (Nov. 8, 2024) – LCU 72 – CSUP 38
Lubbock Christian dominated Colorado State Pueblo 72–38, holding the ThunderWolves to 22.2% shooting while hitting 51.9% themselves.
Grace Foster led with an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double, and
Audrey Robertson added 14 points and six assists. LCU controlled the game from the start, using three first-quarter threes to build a 21–7 lead and stretching the margin to 37–19 at halftime behind Foster's 14 first-half points. The Lady Chaps blew the game open with a 20–6 third quarter, shooting 60% while CSUP went 2-of-13. All 10 active players scored as LCU posted a 44–31 rebounding edge, nine made threes, and its third straight wire-to-wire win.
