McCoy, Chappell Power No. 4 LCU Past ASU as LCU Goes Perfect at Home in 2025

Lady Chaps Use Dominant Second Quarter and Dual 20-Point Performances to Stay Unbeaten at 9–0

LUBBOCK, Texas (December 6, 2025) – No. 4 Lubbock Christian University remained unbeaten and extended its home winning streak to 22 games Saturday afternoon, rolling past Angelo State 77–59 inside Rip Griffin Center to move to 9–0 overall and 2–0 in Lone Star Conference play. The Lady Chaps closed their 2025 home schedule (calendar wise) at a perfect 12–0.

LCU took control with a dominant second quarter, holding ASU to 2-of-12 shooting and forcing nine straight misses to end the half. The Lady Chaps strung together a 15–0 run during a 6:44 stretch and outscored the Rambelles 19–2 over a field-goal drought that lasted more than 10 minutes. LCU shot an even 50 percent from the floor (24–48) for the second time this season and finished 10-of-20 from beyond the arc.

Forward Martie McCoy delivered a career afternoon, scoring 21 points on 6-of-7 shooting and 3-of-4 from three-point range while drawing 10 fouls, collecting seven rebounds and posting a game-high +20 plus/minus. She was joined by guard Kennedy Chappell, who totaled 20 points, six assists and four steals. Chappell became just the third Lady Chap in the NCAA era to record a 20-point, 6-assist, 4-steal line and has reached double figures in eight of LCU's nine contests. The duo's performance marked the second time this season LCU has had multiple 20-point scorers in the same game.

LCU's balance continued throughout the rotation. Meg Meekins added nine points and seven rebounds, while Taylor Allen and Deja Johnson each provided six off the bench. The Lady Chaps dominated the interior despite ASU's perimeter output, outscoring the Rambelles 28–8 in the paint and limiting them to nine total two-point field goals. Angelo State entered the day averaging just 3.8 made threes per game but knocked down 10 on 30 attempts. LCU matched ASU's outside shooting while maintaining a decisive advantage at the rim and at the free-throw line (19-of-25).

Angelo State (1–6, 0–2 LSC) was led by guard Majik Esquivel's 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 2-of-6 from three and a perfect 4-of-4 at the line. Taylor Grona added 13 points and four assists, and Stevi Lockhart chipped in 10 points. The Rambelles' long-range accuracy kept them within striking distance early, but they were outscored in the paint, on fast breaks and in bench production. ASU committed 18 turnovers and shot just 34.5 percent overall, including a 16.7-percent second quarter that allowed LCU to seize full control.

The Lady Chaps led for more than 31 minutes and built their largest advantage at 21 points early in the fourth quarter. The win marked LCU's third straight in the series and improved the program to 11–2 against Angelo State in Lubbock.

How It Happened
The game began with both teams evenly matched in the first quarter, resulting in a close 18-16 lead for the Lady Chaps. Meg Meekins contributed significantly with an early layup and a three-pointer to tie the score at 16-16. Kennedy Chappell was impactful defensively, swiping two steals and hitting a crucial jumper to give the Chaparrals the lead. Despite Majik Esquivel's three-pointer for ASU to give them a 16-13 advantage with two minutes left in the frame, the Lady Chaps responded with Meekins' three-pointer followed by a field goal by Chappell to help LCU close the quarter on a 5-0 run for an 18-16 lead. Meekins led LCU with seven points.

The Chaparrals gained momentum early in the second quarter with Tia Johnson's three-pointer, assisted by Meekins, pushing the score to 21-18. Although Stevi Lockhart quickly responded for the Belles with a three-pointer, tying the game at 21-21, the Lady Chaps pulled away with a dominant stretch, including a three-pointer from Chappell, also assisted by Meekins. Martie McCoy finished the quarter by making a pair of free throws, extending their lead to 37-22. Lubbock Christian outscored ASU 19-7 in the quarter, ending with a 37-23 lead. McCoy (6) and Chappell (5) combined for 11 points in the quarter and Chappell led LCU with 10 points at the break.

The Chaps maintained a strong lead throughout the third quarter, beginning with McCoy's three-pointer 40 seconds into the half. ASU called back-to-back timeouts shortly after, but LCU's steady offensive output countered any momentum shifts. Chappell contributed significantly, scoring from the paint and at the free-throw line, with two successful free throws extending the lead. Despite ASU's attempts to close the gap, including a three-pointer by Landry Morrow midway through the period, LCU capitalized on free-throw opportunities, closing the quarter with a 60-41 advantage (LCU was 10-of-12, 83.3%, from the line in the frame). Chappell (7) and McCoy (6) had another big period, combining for 13 points.

In the fourth quarter, LCU maintained their lead despite ASU's efforts. Meekins contributed with a jumper early in the period, while McCoy bolstered the home team's score with a layup and three-pointer. Morrow attempted to close the gap with a three-pointer, followed by a jumper from Esquivel, but the Lady Chaps' defensive rebounds and timely scoring, including a jumper from Chappell in the final minute, ensured their 77-59 victory. Although ASU outscored LCU in the period, 18-17 behind four three-pointers, LCU secured the victory with seven points from McCoy.  She finished the second half with 13 points and combined with Chappell (10) for 23 points in the second half.
