Lady Chaps Head Coach Steve Gomez Will Serve as Head Coach of USA Basketball’s U16 Women’s National Team

LUBBOCK, Texas (May 5, 2025) – Lubbock Christian University head women's basketball coach Steve Gomez has been named head coach of the 2025 USA Basketball Women's U16 National Team, as announced by USA Basketball Monday from its headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Gomez will lead the U.S. at the 2025 FIBA U16 Women's AmeriCup this summer, marking his head coaching debut for USA Basketball after two previous assistant coaching assignments. He will be joined on the staff by assistant coaches Brittanny Johnson (Evanston Township High School, Illinois) and Krystle Johnson (Hoover High School, Alabama). The U.S. will look to claim its fifth consecutive gold medal and eighth overall at the event since its inception in 2009.

No stranger to international success, Gomez previously served as an assistant coach for the USA at the 2017 FIBA U16 Women's Americas Championship and the 2018 FIBA U17 Women's World Cup—two squads that featured current WNBA stars such as Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, Paige Bueckers, Cameron Brink, and others. He most recently served as a court coach during the 2025 April Women's Junior National Team minicamp.

Gomez recently completed his 22nd season leading LCU, guiding the Lady Chaps to a 32-5 record in 2024-25, a share of the Lone Star Conference regular season title, the LSC West Division title, and their fifth NCAA South Central Regional championship. The season culminated in LCU's fifth NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearance, held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The program's all-time winningest coach with a career record of 553-157, Gomez has led LCU to three NCAA Division II national championships (2016, 2019, 2021), including two undefeated title runs—making LCU the only NCAA Division II program with multiple unbeaten championship seasons. His NCAA postseason record stands at an impressive 27-5.

Gomez was named the 2024-25 Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year, marking his seventh career conference Coach of the Year honor. He previously earned the prestigious 2016 WBCA NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year award and has also been recognized as Coach of the Year in the Heartland Conference (four times) and Sooner Athletic Conference (once).

While honored to serve his country in an international coaching role, Gomez will continue in his role as head coach at Lubbock Christian University.

Further details on the U16 Women's AmeriCup, including location and dates, are expected to be announced soon by USA Basketball.
