LUBBOCK, Texas (September 17. 2025) — Lubbock Christian dominated Sul Ross State with a decisive 5-0 victory on Senior Night Wednesday at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.
The Chaparrals unleashed a relentless attack, registering 33 shots, including 15 on goal. The home team scored four second-half goals to seal the shutout win and spread the wealth offensively, getting goals from five different players and assists from four more.
Lubbock Christian improved to 3-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in Lone Star Conference play. Sul Ross State fell to 1-4-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.
Lubbock Christian took charge in the first half, with
Ella Spiller breaking the deadlock in the 24th minute, assisted by
Lauren Rotan. It was Rotan's first assist and point of the 2025 season.
The Lady Chaps pressed consistently, with
Journey Curs leading the offensive efforts early on, recording multiple shots, although they were either saved or off-target. Despite missing a penalty opportunity in the 36th minute, they maintained a 1-0 lead over of the Lobos at halftime.
The second half began with the Lady Chaps asserting control over the match, as
Sydney Smith opened the scoring in the 55th minute with an assist from Curs. For Smith, a freshman from Keller, Texas, it was the first goal of her collegiate career.
They continued their offensive pressure, with
Mia Chambliss and
Duschka Diaz both finding the net in the 70th and 74th minutes, respectively. Chambliss got her second score of the season, but Diaz, who was one of the four seniors honored before the game, it was her first of the season and in her first appearance of the year.
Kaitlyn Freeman, another senior, sealed the dominating performance, scoring in the 86th minute off a
Riley Espinoza assist, securing a 5-0 victory over Sul Ross. Freeman's goal was the first of her career and in just her fifth career appearance.
Smith scored a goal on her only shot, finishing with two points for the Lady Chaps. Espinoza's assist was her third already this season, which is tied for the second-most in the Lone Star Conference.
Emma Wright secured her second shutout of the season in her 90 minutes as goalkeeper, not facing any shots on goal.
GAME NOTES:
- The Lady Chaps' 33 shots were their most in a single game since they had 35 against Wayland Baptist on Sept. 20, 2019.
- LCU held Sul Ross without a shot on goal or even a shot in the win. The last time LCU held a team without a shot on goal was Oct. 15, 2022, against Texas Woman's.
- With a goal and an assist,
Ella Spiller now has 10 points on the season, already more than halfway to her 2024 total of 2017
- Lubbock Christian only scored five goals once last season, on Oct. 24, 2022, against Eastern New Mexico.
- The Lady Chaps' nine corner kicks were the most they earned in a single game since Sept. 9, 2023, when they had nine against New Mexico Highlands.
