Lady Chaps unable to share conference lead with UAFS following loss
LUBBOCK, Texas (October 25, 2014) – Lubbock Christian was unable join Arkansas-Fort Smith atop the Heartland Conference standings after being swept by the Lady Lions in a 1-2 showdown October 25 at the Rip Griffin Center.
The match against UAFS (20-4, 12-1 Heartland) marked the first time this season the Lady Chaps (15-5, 11-3 Heartland) have been swept and gave LCU a two-game losing streak, its only string of defeats on the year. The Lady Chaps attack percentage was a dismal .037 on the day, bettering only the .012 hit against the Lady Lions in Fort Smith, Ark., on September 18, where UAFS won 3-1. LCU has yet to ever beat Fort Smith, dropping all four contests dating to the 2012 season.
No Lady Chap reached double-digit kills on the afternoon, the first such occurrence this season, with Maddie Johnson and Channing Castleberry tallying a team-high seven. Per the squad tallying a season-low 26 kills, Erin Fisher, the conference's leader in assists per set, was only able to hand out 23 total helpers.
LCU took its first lead of the match at 13-12 in set one on an Amy Edwards kill, and Castleberry tacked on another point for a 14-12 Lady Chap edge before an LCU service and attack error brought UAFS back into a tie. Fisher and Edwards made a stop at the net on an attack attempt by Katarina Krstonosic, and a Lady Lion attack landed just outside to pull LCU to within 18-17. With the Lady Chaps trailing 19-18, UAFS scored five unanswered points to jump ahead 23-18, leading to a 25-19 win.
Set two was over rather quickly, as the Lady Lions pieced together a five-point run and two series of seven unanswered points. The Lady Chaps tallied five kills in the set, trailing by as much as 14 before UAFS went on to win 25-8.
The Lady Chaps received two points from the Lady Lions at the start of set three by way of a service and attack error, and Christiana Tavo delivered a kill and a block alongside Edwards for a 4-1 LCU advantage. Lady Lion Michelle Walker then went to work, recording a kill, a solo block and a block with Jessica Anderson to give UAFS their first lead of the set at 5-4. A service error by LCU found the Lady Chaps at a 10-6 disadvantage before fighting back to 16-15 deficit following an Edwards' kill. A huge block by Edwards and Fisher again made it a one-point game at 18-17, but a pair of Lady Lion kills combined with two LCU attack errors put UAFS ahead 22-17. Two attack errors by way of Fort Smith brought the Lady Chaps a bit closer at 22-19, but UAFS closed out the set scoring four points compared to one from LCU, to take the match with a 25-20 victory.
For UAFS, Walker had a game-high 14 kills.
