GOLDEN, Colo. (November 15, 2014) – Lubbock Christian University was able to overcome a cold shooting performance and
Haley Fowler produced her first career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to help LCU claim their first victory of the season with a 65-62 win over Colorado School of Mines Saturday night at Lockridge Arena.
LCU was able to win despite a 9/35 (25.7%) shooting performance in the second half and a 30.6% (19/62) shooting clip in the game. The Lady Chaps, who never shot under 40% from the field last season, had their worst shooting performance since shooting 20.9% against Metro State on Nov. 5, 2011. Game-by-game statistical archives go back 11 seasons and the 30.6% shooting mark is the lowest shooting mark in which LCU won.
Bailey Haist (1-of-10),
Kellyn Schneider (1-of-7),
Tess Bruffey (1-of-6) and
Hannah Harbin (1-of-5) each had a frustrating night, combining for a 4-of-28 (14.3%) shooting mark.
The positive was LCU's ability to garner the victory after dropping a seven-point lead and the game to open the season Friday. They led 33-26 at the half and led as much as nine points (41-32) in the second half before CSM rallied back. The Orediggers were able to rally to tie the game at 51-51 with less than seven minutes to go. The game would be tied as late as 55-55 with 4:18 remaining, but LCU never allowed CSM regain the lead. Schneider and Haist each had their first field goal of the game inside the final five minutes and they came as part of a 6-0 LCU run for a 61-55 with 3:04 remaining.
The Lady Chaps, who faced a free-throw shooting discrepancy Friday night, was able to take advantage of the opportunity Saturday. LCU (21/30 from the line in the game) outscored CSM 21-6 from the line. Schneider was 6-for-6 from the line.
LCU had nine blocks in the game, with seven coming from
Kellyn Schneider. The seven blocks is the most by a Lady Chap over the prior 11 seasons that archived game-by-game statistics have been kept on file. Schneider finished the game with 11 rebounds, eight points and seven blocks.
Haley Burton produced 14 points for LCU and was the only player to join Fowler in double figures for LCU. Fowler was 6-of-11 from the field for her 16 points and also had nine rebounds on the defensive end for 11 overall rebounds in the game.
Callie Sandusky provided LCU a solid four minutes off the bench. She produced two steals, two points, a block, an assist and a rebound. Courtney Martin led CSM with 17 points.
The contest was the first ever meeting between the two programs. The win provided LCU a 1-1 mark to open the season, while CSM had their record fall to 1-1. LCU heads home for their home opener Saturday, as they host Mid-America Christian University at 1 p.m. inside Rip Griffin Center.
