Box Score LUBBOCK, Texas (November 22, 2014) -
Kellyn Schneider matched a Lubbock Christian University single-game program record with eight blocks, and five different Lady Chaparrals finished in double figures offensively to help LCU claim an 87-68 win in their home opener over Mid-America Christian University Saturday afternoon inside Rip Griffin Center.
Schneider produced eight of LCU's 14 blocks in the game. The eight blocks was the most since Suzanne Copeland posted 18 on Feb. 12, 1991. The team's 14 blocks was three away from their program record of 17 blocks (Feb. 19, 1991) and it is only the second time a Lady Chaps squad has produced at least 10 blocks in a game under
Steve Gomez, who is coaching in his 12th season with the Lady Chaps.
Along with eight blocks, Schneider also produced 16 rebounds, which is the highest individual game total for a Lady Chap since Jordan Hampton produced 16 on Jan. 27, 2007. Schneider produced 11 of her rebounds in the first half.
The game's shooting was sloppy at first, as a little over four minutes into the contest, LCU was 2-of-9 from the field (22%), but leading 9-5 over MACU, who was 2-of-6 (33%) from the field at the same point. LCU would go on to shoot 53.6% (15/28). They would go 13-of-19 (68.4%) after their first nine shot at-tempts in the half, including a span of six minutes in which they were 7-of-8 from the field. They out-scored MACU 18-9 over the stretch and led 39-19 with 6:24 remaining in the half. LCU would eventually use 12 points in the half from
Tess Bruffey for a 48-29 halftime lead.
Alexia Kelley, who did not play in the opening half, scored the opening bucket of the second half for MACU and helped MACU rally back. A 6-1 run capped by a Kelley jumper with 14:18 remaining cut LCU's lead to 55-42.
Blair Taylor helped LCU steal the momentum by knocking down a three-pointer, as part of a career-high 12-point performance, to help ignite a 9-2 run for a 64-44 lead with 11:13 left. MACU never got within 17 points the rest of the way and trailed as much as 81-53 (5:17 remaining) before the final horn sounded.
Taylor scored 10 points in the second half to lead all scorers past the break. She was joined in double figures by
Haley Burton (15 points),
Tess Bruffey (14 points),
Bailey Haist (10 points) and
Haley Fowler (10 points). Burton also provided seven assists.
Callie Sandusky matched a career high with six points and also had a career high three blocks. MACU received 12 points in the loss from Shakayla Love and Ashlee Ferguson missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The win was LCU's third consecutive home opener with a victory. They are now 11-1 all-time in home openers under head coach
Steve Gomez. They also extend their home win streak to 18 games.
The Lady Chaps improve to 2-1 on the season, while the game was an exhibition game for MACU, who is a NAIA member and former Sooner Athletic Conference foe. LCU hits the road Monday and faces Ange-lo State University at 7 p.m. in San Angelo, Texas.
