AUSTIN, Texas (November 6, 2014) – Paced by a game and season-high 17 kills from
Abby White, Lubbock Christian closed out its second Heartland Conference campaign with a 3-1 win over St. Edward's Thursday night at Recreation and Convocation Center to clinch a second place finish within the league.
Coming into the contest, the Lady Chaps (17-5, 13-3 Heartland) sat a game ahead of the Hilltoppers (16-7, 10-5 Heartland), and with the win LCU doubled its margin to two games with a single match remaining on SEU's slate to solely finish in the number two spot with a 13-3 Heartland Conference record. The 13 wins match last season's conference victories.
White's impressive performance was highlighted by her.455 attack percentage, and she had plenty of help up front with
Amy Edwards contributing 15 kills and a game-high three blocks and
Maddie Johnson adding a dozen kills, all directed by
Erin Fisher's game-high 51 assists.
Set one included 12 ties and five lead changes, in which the final fluctuation occurred at 23-22 with LCU jumping ahead on an SEU service error. Edwards tallied the last two points for the Lady Chaps en route to the 25-23 victory. In set two, an athletic save by libero
Christa Daniel as she somersaulted into the back wall off of an errant LCU pass salvaged a lost point and led to an Edwards' kill for a 17-15 edge. A pair of kills by Johnson pushed the Lady Chaps out front at 20-16 before the Hilltoppers reeled off a trio of points to close the gap to 20-19. Johnson responded with another kill and White added two more moments later to steer LCU to a 25-22 win.
The Lady Chaps took a 9-5 lead in set three before SEU regained control during a 10-2 Hilltopper run to pull ahead 15-12. Following an SEU service error, Edwards delivered two kills and then teamed up with Fisher for a block to again put the Lady Chaps in front at 16-15. Seven straight points by SEU after a 17-17 tie proved to be too much for LCU, giving the Hilltoppers a 25-19 victory and forcing a fourth set.
Two miscues by St. Edward's, an ace by
Malori Maddox and a kill by White gave LCU a 12-9 lead in set four.
Bryce Shankle then entered the game and made an impact with a kill and ace to put LCU on top, 17-14. Two kills by SEU's Katie Martin and a mistimed attack from LCU's offense pulled the Hilltoppers to within 18-17 before Johnson threw down three kills and Fisher delivered an ace for a 22-19 LCU lead, turning into a 25-20 Lady Chap set and match victory.
For SEU, Martin tallied 14 kills.
The Lady Chaps conclude the 2014 season Saturday at Lone Star Conference member Angelo State for a noon matchup.
