Wendl and Sanchez Net Hats In Season Opening Win

Box Score LUBBOCK, Texas (September 4, 2014) – Brooke Wendl broke the program single-game record with eight points, including her first collegiate hat trick, and Lubbock Christian University also received a hat trick from Claudia Sanchez en route to a 9-2 victory Thursday over University of the Southwest (N.M.) in the Lady Chaparrals season opener at LCU Soccer Field.

Wendl, the program's career scoring leader, quickly added to her totals to open the season. Just 2:19 into the game, Wendl received a pass from Racheal Eckert and dribbled through the defense before firing a shot through the right side for the opening lead. Less than 10 minutes later in the 13th minute, she capitalized with her second marker of the game and 25th of her LCU career. Ashley Ledford fed her a lead pass leading to a breakaway goal for Wendl. USW cut into the 2-0 deficit in the 20th minute with Cruz Castillo scoring on a breakaway. The comeback hopes for the Mustangs were quickly faded when Jamie Boone knocked one of LCU's 13 corner kicks into the goal less than two minutes after Castillo's goal for a 3-1 LCU lead.

The Lady Chaps produced six goals in the second half, with three scored by the Sanchez. The freshman scored her first goal 2:10 into the second half, as she played a rebound off Boone's crossbar miss into the net. Boone had a scoring chance less than seven minutes later in the 55th minute, but she was taken down in the box by Castillo, which led to a yellow card and a penalty kick. Wendl took the kick and converted it for a 5-1 lead. Valeria Moreno converted on a cross to trail 5-2, but it is as close as they would get. LCU went on to score four goals over a span of three minutes and 25 seconds (3:25). Sanchez (65th and 69th minute) bookended the goals, with Boone and Shannon Rogers scoring in between.

Sanchez's trio of goals were tallied over a span of 19 minutes and 9 seconds (19:09) and Wendl's three were completed in a span of 51 minutes and 42 seconds (51:42). The two hat tricks are the sixth and seventh hat tricks produced in program history and the first hat trick since Saydee Bailey recorded one on Sept.3, 2012. Ledford, Boone and Wendl each matched a program single-game record with two assists, which had been completed 13 times prior to the game. It is the fifth time Wendl has completed the task. Boone produced a six-point performance with two goals and two assists.

The nine goals by LCU was the most since Sept. 3, 2012, when LCU defeated Wiley 11-0 in Dallas. It matched the program single-game mark at home, last completed when LCU defeated USW 9-0 in the first game played in program history (Aug. 28, 2010). Overall, LCU's nine markers matched the third most in program history. They also produced 25 points (9g, 7a), which was the third most in program history (34 – Sept. 3, 2012).

LCU out-shot USW 30-4 in the game. Goalkeeper Lauren Story received the win in goal for LCU and appeared in goal for 67:44 before being replaced by Leslie Castellano. Story subbing off was a rare sight, as she appeared in goal during the entirety of all 17 games last season.

The Lady Chaps are now 4-0-1 all-time in season openers and each contest has doubled as a home opener and has been against USW. The Mustangs dropped to 0-2-1 on the season, while LCU opens the season 1-0-0. The Lady Chaps head up the road Saturday, facing rival Wayland Baptist at 11 a.m. in Plainview, Texas.
