LUBBOCK, Texas (January 15, 2015) –
Haley Burton's 17 points led a foursome of Lady Chaparrals in double figures, which included an 18-rebound and 10-point double-double from
Kellyn Schneider, and Lubbock Christian University cruised to an 81-63 Heartland Conference victory over Rogers State Univer-sity Thursday night inside Rip Griffin Center.
Burton, who entered the game 4-of-24 from three-point range over the prior four games, opened the game 3-of-3 from long range to help LCU jump out early. Her first two were part of a 10-0 run to bounce back from a 10-7 deficit, and her third capped a 15-2 run for a 29-11 lead with 7:42 remaining in the first half. The three three-pointers helped move her into fourth place on LCU's all-time three-point field goal list with 184. She needs four more to move into third place on the all-time list (move past Angie Taylor, who had 187 from 1996-2000).
The senior from Shallowater, Texas scored 13 of her 17 points in the opening half. Her final first half field goal gave LCU a 39-18 lead before LCU settled for a 39-23 halftime lead. LCU held RSU to a 23.3% (7/30) shooting percentage in the first half and to a 15.4% (2/13) mark from the perimeter.
Inside players Schneider and
Tess Bruffey provided the offensive firepower for LCU in the second half. Bruffey (5/7) and Schneider (4/5) combined for 21 points and a 9-of-12 (75%) shooting mark in the half. LCU led as much as 24 and never led by less than 16 points in the second half.
The Lady Chaps finished the game shooting 51.7% (30/58) for their third game to shoot over 50% this season. The mark was aided by a 57.1% (16/28) shooting percentage in the second half. Along with Bur-ton's 17 points, LCU received 16 points from
Allison Szabo, 15 points from Bruffey and 10 points from Schneider. The double-double from Schneider was her third and the career-high 18 rebounds was the most by a Lady Chap since Candace Clenney produced 19 on Feb. 23, 2006 against Science & Arts of Oklahoma.
LCU was able to out-rebound RSU 45-24 for their sixth consecutive game out-rebounding the opposition. The Lady Chaps out-scored RSU 14-2 in second chance scoring.
RSU, falling to 4-10 overall and 2-4 in conference, received 14 points from Mikaila Newton and a career high 10 points from Madison Dearmin in the loss. They did out-score LCU 16-9 in points off turnovers, and turned the ball over only six times. LCU, who has been plagued with 17 turnovers or more in the last six consecutive games prior, turned the ball over 11 times in the game.
Lubbock Christian improved to 10-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Lady Chaps have now de-feated their former Sooner Athletic Conference foes four straight times and have won seven of the last eight meetings. LCU has also won 19 consecutive home conference games. They will put that streak on the line Saturday at 1 p.m., hosting Arkansas – Fort Smith, who comes to Lubbock 6-1 over their prior seven games and on a four-game win streak.
