Seven-Run Seventh Inning Completes Comeback Win To Open Season

LCU Now 10-3 in Season Openers Under Head Coach Nathan Blackwood

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 4, 2015) – Lubbock Christian University used a seven-run seventh inning to open the 2016 season with a 12-7 victory over Adams State University Thursday evening at Hays Field.

LCU went into the seventh inning trailing the Grizzlies 7-3. Brandon Rix led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double, but most of the Chaparrals damage came with two outs. Seven consecutive Chaps reached base safely with two outs, leading to five of the runs. Dillon Drury and JP Rousseau each had two-out doubles during the rally, with Rousseau's double driving in a pair of runs.  LCU produced seven runs off six hits and took advantage of two ASU errors in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 10-7 advantage. A Ryan Rogers two-run single in the eighth inning helped tack on a pair of insurance runs to nail down the first victory of the season.

The Chaps had to play from behind after falling behind 5-0 in the top of the second inning. Adams State produced four hits, all singles, in the five-run second inning for the game's first lead. Hunter McFall recorded a pair of runs-batted-in hitting into outs, but was able to help LCU cut the deficit 5-3. A two-run triple by Chris Morley helped ASU extend the lead to 7-3 in the fifth inning before LCU mounted their comeback.

Lubbock Christian had 11 different batters in the game and all 11 had at least a hit. Rix led all players with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Rousseau and Brandon Urquizo each went 2-for-4. LCU out-hit Adams State 16-7.

Neither starting pitcher was recorded with a decision. ASU's Bailey Garcia went the opening five innings and allowed three runs off seven hits, while LCU's Russell Reber went 5.2 innings and allowed seven runs off six hits. Glen Warrick claimed the win (1-0) by allowing one hit over the final 3.1 innings of the game. Josh Keaton allowed five runs in 1.2 innings of relief and was tagged with the loss.

LCU (1-0) opened the season with a win for the 10th time under head coach Nathan Blackwood, who is in his 13th season (10-3 all-time in season openers).  The game also served as the season opener for the Grizzlies (0-1). The two teams play the second game of their three-game series Friday at 3 p.m.
