Chaps Walk-Off With Win To Cap Another Late Rally

LCU Gets Second Straight Win When Trailing In Seventh Inning or Later

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 5, 2016) – Lubbock Christian University capitalized on Adams State University mistakes with an unearned run in the eighth and ninth inning, with the latter capping a 7-6 come-from-behind walk-off win Friday afternoon at Hays Field.

Thursday, LCU trailed in the seventh inning and responded with a seven-run inning to garner a 12-7 win. Friday, LCU trailed 6-5 in the eighth inning and sparked a rally with lead-off batter Brandon Rix reaching on a throwing error. Jaime Bustamante pinch ran for Rix eventually scored on a base hit by Brandon Urquizo to tie the game at 6-6. In the bottom of the ninth, a walk, balk, intentional walk and fielding error led to LCU loading the bases, and Hunter McFall scored the game winning run off a fielders' choice hit into by JP Rousseau. McFall was able to beat the throw from first base on a force out attempt after Rousseau hit a ground ball to first base.

LCU received another win on the mound by a reliever. Thursday it was Glenn Warrick and Friday it was Ricky Contreras claiming the win. Contreras pitched the final 1.2 innings and allowed one hit and struck out a pair of batters. It was a tough loss for Grizzlies reliever Kyle Godfrey to take. He pitched the final 4.1 innings for ASU and held LCU to one hit.

The game opened up as a back and forth contest. LCU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning off a Brett Wilhelm RBI, but ASU responded in the top of the third inning with Zach Moldenhauer driving in a pair of runs to give the Grizzlies a 2-1 lead. LCU quickly responded in the bottom half of the third inning with Tony Reyes following a Jesse Pintado RBI base hit with a two-run single to cap a three-run inning for a 4-2 LCU lead. McFall made it 5-2 with an RBI single in the fourth inning, but the Grizzlies eventually came back. A pair of walks issued by reliever Brian Baker and a sacrifice fly led to a two-run seventh inning, and ASU tacked on two more in the eight inning off a Dillon Bollig two-run home run to help ASU regain the lead at 6-5.

Guillaume Blanchette, LCU's only returning pitcher from the 2015 weekend rotation, received his first start of the season. He went six innings and allowed two runs off five hits and struck out seven batters. Tanner Wiemers received the start for ASU and allowed five runs off seven hits in four innings.

LCU produced eight hits in the game and all eight hits were singles. McFall (2-for-3), Pintado (2-for-5) and Reyes (2-for-5) each had multi-hit games for the Chaps. Reyes finished with a pair of runs-batted-in. Moldenhauer was ASU's only multi-hit producer going 2-for-3.  Bollig and Moldenhauer each finished with a pair of runs-batted-in.

The win places LCU with a 2-0 record and ASU falls to 0-2. It was LCU's sixth consecutive win over ASU in the all-time series. LCU will seek the series sweep Saturday at noon.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
0 – LCU did not commit an error for the second game in a row. LCU went error-free in only 12 games last season and only twice went error-free in consecutive games.
8 – LCU had eight hits and all singles in the game. Ironically enough, LCU's second game of last season was against ASU and LCU won with eight hits produced. All were singles.
10 – LCU's pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts. A feat accomplished only six times last season (only once over their final 13 games of the season).
